Press Release: National Trust Thanks the Community for the Overwhelming Support of The Heritage Bakehouse - The National Trust of the Cayman Islands, in partnership with the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism (CIDOT), extends heartfelt thanks to the Caymanian community for the extraordinary outpouring of support for The Heritage Bakehouse, the hands-on cassava heavy cake experience hosted at the historic Mission House.

Since launching the revamped programme, community response has been exceptionally positive. Classes have filled quickly, and bookings now extend through 9 September 2026, demonstrating strong and sustained interest in the experience.

The popularity of the programme has resulted in classes becoming oversubscribed. To ensure both residents and visitors alike can enjoy this cultural experience, the National Trust is working to introduce additional class dates and expand capacity where possible. These efforts aim to balance demand, maintain the intimate quality of the experience, and ensure fair access for all.

“We ask for the community’s continued support and patience as we work through the overwhelming demand,” the National Trust added. “Your enthusiasm is the reason this programme is thriving, and we are committed to growing it sustainably so everyone has the opportunity to enjoy it.”

Further updates on new class dates and availability will be shared in the coming weeks.

Join us for an enlightening journey through time with the upcoming West Bay District Committee (WBDC) Walking Tour on Discovery Day, May 18, 2026, 4:30pm-6:00pm starting and ending at John Gray Memorial Church. This unique event offers a chance to explore Central West Bay’s rich history with a newly digitized version of the historic walking tour booklet, scanned by Alanna Warwick-Smith and digitally remade by Mike Hoffman.

“When I took the walking tour this past January, I realized how much care had gone into the original booklet. Arthurlyn's writing, the great illustrations and all the memories the West Bay elders shared with the editorial committee. Putting it into a digital format was a small way to help that work keep reaching people. The tour itself puts names and stories back onto streets and buildings that would otherwise just blur past. The original guide notes that some of these streets retained their character "in spite of the pressures all around them," and the walking tour lets you see what's still here, what's been replaced, and what's worth recognizing as the district keeps growing.” Mike Hoffman, National Trust volunteer and member of WBDC.

As much of what existed 33 years ago has vanished, this booklet serves as an invaluable historical record, offering insights into the past that might otherwise be lost. Don’t miss this opportunity to connect with the heritage of West Bay and experience the stories that have shaped its vibrant community. Email [email protected] to RSVP and reserve your spot for this upcoming Historic Walking Tour of West Bay.

The next generation of Grand Cayman Blue Iguanas is on the way!

After an eventful mating season, the oldest resident at the Blue Iguana Conservation Facility, Lady Pop, successfully deposited 22 eggs. Lady Pop, who will turn 37 in just a few weeks, has been paired for several years with Iggy Stardust, who will celebrate his 20th birthday on 23 August 2026.

The eggs were carefully excavated by Joe Jamieson and wardens Justin Ebanks and Jordan Whorms before being transferred to incubators at the National Trust office. If all goes well, baby iguanas are expected to hatch in approximately 70 days.

Located within the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park, the Blue Iguana Conservation facility has become a popular attraction for both residents and visitors, offering a rare opportunity to see the unique reptile found nowhere else on Earth.

The conservation project remains highly scientific, with genetics playing a key role in breeding decisions.

“This stems from the fact that there were so few iguanas available in the early days of the program,” explained National Trust Director Frank Roulstone.

The long-term goal is to maintain a viable wild population despite the natural and introduced threats iguanas face.

“We keep them in the facility until they achieve a weight and length that gives them the best chance of survival once released,” said Joe Jamieson, an eight-year veteran of the program. “They are then placed within National Trust properties that offer the safest environment for them, although they do travel around. We have collected them from as far afield as the cruise port in George Town.”

“This was such a fitting start to International Blue Iguana Day,” noted Laura Butz. “We are so grateful for the community support we have received over the 36 years of the program, and congratulations to Walkers for being the sponsor of the first proud dad of 2026!”

The facility is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be reached via a short walk along the nature trail inside the park.
