Shaping future careers! 🛠️💼 ♻🌎

On September 18, 2026, the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) joined eager students at the CIFEC Career Fair to showcase the diverse pathways available within our sector.

As we look ahead to the observance of World Environmental Health Day on September 26, our team highlighted how vital environmental health careers are to the resilience of our islands. From environmental monitoring and laboratories to district sanitation and technical operations, we shared how these students can turn a passion for the community into a rewarding, impactful career.

What an eye-opening experience with the Year 12 students!

On September 15, 2026, as part of our educational outreach programme, these bright minds took a deep dive into local waste management with a tour of the George Town Landfill and the DEH Recycling Centre.This impactful activity took place as the world celebrates World Environmental Health Day on September 26.

Seeing the scale of our waste firsthand sparked critical conversations about consumption and the vital role recycling plays in protecting our public health and natural surroundings. These students asked fantastic questions and showed a real commitment to a cleaner, greener Cayman.

The Department of Environmental Health has relaunched its recycling programme in Cayman Brac, giving residents greater access to recycling services and providing additional opportunities to reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill.

The relaunch was marked by a visit to Cayman Brac by Minister of Health, Environment and Sustainability, Honourable Katherine Ebanks-Wilks, Minister for District Administration and Home Affairs, Honourable Nickolas DaCosta, and DEH Director Mr. Richard Simms and his team, highlighting the importance of recycling and responsible waste management in the Sister Islands.

The programme has begun with the collection of two recyclable materials streams: Plastic Types 1 (PET) and 2 (HDPE), as well as metal cans and aluminium.

Cayman Brac residents are encouraged to ensure their recyclables are clean before dropping them off at either of the two DEH Recycling Depot locations:
• Stake Bay - Outside Layman Scott High School
• West End - Outside West End Primary School

Recyclables collected through the programme will be taken to a designated area at the Cayman Brac Landfill, where they will be securely stored until they are shipped to the DEH Recycling Centre in George Town for processing.

The programme will be expanded in phases, with additional recycling locations and more recyclable material streams coming soon. The DEH also plans to extend the programme to Little Cayman, further increasing recycling opportunities across the Sister Islands.

As part of our department's ongoing educational outreach programme, we hosted a vibrant presentation and interactive activity session focused on vital environmental health matters. Ahead of celebrating this year's World Environmental Day, our session turned the spotlight on Rethinking Waste 🌎♻️.

The energy, curiosity, and passion of these young leaders were truly inspiring as we explored creative ways to reduce, reuse, and protect our planet. Investing in our youth is the most impactful way to secure a healthier, more sustainable future. A huge thank you to the Girls' Brigade for having us and for being such fantastic eco-champions!

Registration is NOW OPEN for the following 👩‍🍳 Food Hygiene training sessions:
📆 September 21 & 28, 2026
📆 October 5, 12, 19 & 26, 2026
📆 November 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30, 2026

Remember! This training is required for all new personnel working in the food industry and anyone whose certification has expired (Certification expires after 3 years).

A registration cost of $15 per person covers all materials and fees should be paid at DEH headquarters, located at 580 North Sound Road, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Building a Stronger Safety Culture

Creating safer workplaces starts with listening.

Fifty-five employees at the Department of Environmental Health's Solid Waste Facility recently took part in the Ministry of Health, Environment and Sustainability's first on-site Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Culture Survey.

The survey will help identify strengths, highlight areas for improvement and shape practical actions to strengthen workplace health and safety in one of Government's highest-risk operational environments.

The initiative forms part of the Ministry's wider Health, Safety and Environment Management System, which is aligned with ISO 45001 principles. Alongside the survey, work is underway to introduce new standard operating procedures and modern workplace health and safety legislation to strengthen protections for workers across the Cayman Islands.

Minister for Health, Environment and Sustainability, Hon. Katherine Ebanks-Wilks, said: *"Before we can lead change effectively, we must listen. We must know where the risks lie, where our systems are strong, and where improvements are needed."*

This initiative will help build a stronger, more proactive safety culture, beginning in high-risk operational areas before expanding more broadly across Government.

🤝 A joint operation in Watlers Road successfully cleared away bulk waste and 10 nuisance vehicles (including 8 cars, a boat, and a wave runner) to improve public health and safety. 🚗⛵🗑️

More operations are planned across the islands to tackle illegal dumping.
