Our office represents the regions of Wallonia, Flanders and Brussels, and covers Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. AWEX Almaty promotes Belgium and its export potential, provides financial support,
provides a general overview, as well as seeks information about potential partners in
the markets of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan for Belgian companies. Our office organises multisectoral

trade missions for interested Belgian companies annually. In addition to trade and economic matters, the office also oversees cultural
and educational cooperation.

🌿 From Plants to Pharmaceuticals. From Belgium to Kazakhstan. 🇧🇪🇰🇿

At Tilman Belgium, medicinal plants are more than ingredients – they are the starting point for pharmaceutical innovation. For nearly 70 years, the Belgian family-owned company has been turning the therapeutic properties of medicinal plants into products that improve everyday well-being – from herbal medicines and food supplements to a wide range of plant-based healthcare solutions.

Founded in 1956 in Baillonville and now led by the third generation of pharmacists, Tilman has become one of Belgium’s leading specialists in phytotherapy. Today, the company’s expertise reaches more than 57 countries, bringing together nature, science and pharmaceutical excellence.

Kazakhstan continues to be an important market in Tilman’s international growth strategy. During the company’s visit to Kazakhstan in April, Tilman representative Mr. Sinisa Colakovic, International Development Director, met with potential partners, explored new opportunities for future cooperation and reaffirmed the company’s long-term commitment to the Kazakh market. Throughout the visit, he was accompanied by Ms. Aizhan M***akanova Aijan M***a, Trade and Economic Counsellor at AWEX Almaty, who facilitated the business meetings and supported the company’s engagement with local stakeholders.

On 21 July, Belgium celebrates its National Day, commemorating the oath taken in 1831 by King Leopold I, the first King of the Belgians. This historic date marks the birth of modern Belgium and reflects the country’s unity, democratic values and openness to the world.

Our sincere thanks to H.E. Erik De Maeyer, Ambassador of Belgium to Kazakhstan Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Astana, for hosting a wonderful reception in celebration of Belgium’s National Day.

The Winter Garden at The St. Regis Astana, with its remarkable architecture inspired by the traditional Kazakh yurt, provided an elegant and welcoming setting for networking and reconnecting with friends and partners of Belgium.

During the business visit to Astana, Ms. Aizhan M***akanova , Trade and Economic Counsellor at AWEX Almaty, had the pleasure of meeting Annick Van Overstraeten, CEO of Le Pain Quotidien Le Pain Quotidien Belgium 🇧🇪, one of Belgium’s most renowned bakery and restaurant brands with an international presence.

The encounter served as a reminder of how Belgian entrepreneurship continues to create valuable connections across borders and regions. As a globally recognised Belgian brand, Le Pain Quotidien reflects Belgium’s strong tradition of innovation, quality, and international business development.

Celebrating means celebrating creativity, openness to the world, and dialogue between cultures.

As part of the Francophonie2026 activities in Almaty, organized in cooperation with the Kazakhstan Association of French Teachers, the Wallonia Export & Investment Agency (AWEX) Wallonia Export and Wallonia-Brussels International Wallonie-Bruxelles International awarded the winners of several competitions for school pupils, students, and teachers:

Belgian innovation shines where it matters most: in healthcare, science, and sustainable partnerships. 🇧🇪🇰🇿
Our Trade and Investment Counsellor at Awex Almaty, Ms. Aizhan M***akanova Aijan M***a, had the honour of accompanying IBA’s individual prospecting visit to Kazakhstan, organised to explore new opportunities and renew contacts established more than 15 years ago.
IBA was represented by Andrew D**e, Sales Director for Central and Eastern Europe | Central Asia and the Caucasus, and Aidana Shagalakova, EMEA Regional Product Manager.
A Belgian and Walloon technological flagship, IBA is a global leader in particle accelerators, proton therapy, dosimetry, and radiopharmaceutical solutions. The company develops cutting-edge technologies serving diagnostics, patient treatment, and scientific research.
Kazakhstan is already familiar with the value of this Belgian expertise: IBA equipment is used in the country for medical and scientific purposes, demonstrating the concrete impact of Belgian innovation on the ground.

The visit also provided an opportunity to consider the future prospects of proton therapy in Central Asia — an advanced treatment technology that could, in time, open up new opportunities for medical, scientific, and technological cooperation in the region.

Together with His Excellency Erik De Maeyer, Ambassador of Belgium to Kazakhstan, our Trade and Investment Counsellor, visited the Soudal production site in Astana on behalf of Wallonia in Kazakhstan, as part of our broader mission also representing Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) in Kazakhstan.

Soudal stands out for its strong industrial know-how, well-established R&D culture, and practical innovation in , , and . In this field, quality often lies in the details — and this is exactly where Soudal brings real added value.

This visit provided a valuable opportunity to witness firsthand the strong presence of in Kazakhstan. We were also pleased to learn about the company’s recent recognition for its excellent financial performance over the period 2022–2024, which clearly reflects the team’s professionalism, consistency, and commitment.
