“KOFIH Strengthens Partnership through Visit to MPSC and UHS Hospital Project”

On 1 April 2026, the Medical Products Supply Center (MPSC) warmly welcomed a high-level delegation from KOFIH Headquarters. Led by Mr. Kwanbaek BAEK, Secretary General, and Ms. Hyunkyoung Kim, Director General, together with Country Representatives from across Asian countries.

The visit provided an opportunity to observe MPSC’s facilities and reflect on the remarkable progress of the Biomedical Engineering (BME) Project. Since its launch, Phase I (2018–2024) has laid a strong foundation for improving medical equipment management in Lao PDR, including the establishment of a National Training Center in Vientiane, strengthened provincial workshops, and improved functionality of medical equipment across key provinces.

Building on this success, Phase II represents a significant step forward by expanding support to additional provinces, advancing digital solutions through the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), strengthening human resource capacity, and fostering collaboration with the University of Health Sciences to develop a Biomedical Engineering (BME) curriculum. Phase II marks a critical turning point toward a more systematic, sustainable, and self-reliant medical equipment management system.

Through continued partnership and strong coordination with MPSC, the project is expected to further enhance the national health system and contribute to better healthcare services for the people of Lao PDR.

The delegation also visited the UHS Hospital construction site in Dongphosy, where they assessed progress of construction and reaffirmed KOFIH’s commitment to advancing health system strengthening in the country.

Elevating Medical Education:
UHS Faculty Capacity-Building Seminar

On March 16, 2026, The University of Health Sciences (UHS) is taking another bold step toward excellence in healthcare education to successfully kick off Day 01 on Faculty Capacity-Building Seminar at the Amari Hotel, Vientiane co-chaired by leaders from KOFIH, UHS, and PMC.

Remarkably, this seminar brought together more than 42 dedicated participants from across 6 faculties, 2 offices, and 1 institute within UHS, who mainly joined in the first Onsite Workshop conducted in Jan 2026, to sharpen the institutional expertise. Importantly, this seminar has fully highlighted these three key areas of medical education enhancement:

• The EPA Paradigm Shift: We explored the Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA) framework, moving from abstract concepts to concrete, task-based assessments in clinical settings. This ensures that the trainees are truly ready for independent practice through 5 distinct levels of supervision.

• Modernizing Assessments: UHS teams are developing the Multiple-Choice Questionnaire (MCQ) process. By building a scientific MCQ Bank, UHS are ensuring their exams are valid, reliable, and perfectly aligned with the educational outcomes of UHS respectively.

• Portfolio-Based Growth: UHS are transitioning from traditional logbooks to Clinical Portfolios. These dynamic tools allow for a longitudinal view of a student’s professional journey, fostering self-directed and reflective clinical excellence.
Through strong and good strategic partnerships, with KOFIH, this milestone is part of the HOMCP Project, supported by technical expertise from Kangbuk Samsung Hospital and Sungkyunwan University as the Project Management Consulting Agencies (PMC). Together, we are providing clearer technical guidance for UHS development teams in MCQ, OSCE, EPA, and Portfolio-Based Assessment crucially.

Handover of IT Equipment to Central Hospitals to Boost Medical Education
On the morning of March 18, 2026, a significant handover ceremony for IT equipment took place at Mittaphab Hospital. The event was attended by representatives from four central hospitals, the University of Health Sciences (UHS), and the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) Office in Lao PDR.
Under the financial support of KOFIH, Kangbuk Samsung Hospital—acting as the Project Management Consultancy (PMC)—procured and provided this equipment to enhance medical education at central hospitals. These facilities serve as primary clerkship training sites for UHS students across various wards.
The initiative aims to improve access to digital learning and elevate the quality of medical education for students and trainees, establishing a strong foundation for the continuous professional development of medical personnel. The handover included mobile TVs, computers, and video conferencing systems, which will foster a more effective learning environment and facilitate the gradual integration of digital tools into medical training.
Moving forward, the PMC and KOFIH plan to continue their support by providing additional medical education materials and consumable supplies for training activities. This partnership will significantly strengthen medical education and contribute to the long-term development of healthcare capacity in Lao PDR.

Capping, Pinning, and Candle-Lighting Ceremony for Second-Year Nursing Students at Dongphosy Campus

On March 11, 2026, the Basic and Community Nursing Sub-Specialty of the Faculty of Nursing Sciences (FONS) held a significant Capping, Pinning, and Candle-Lighting ceremony for 55 second-year nursing students. This event was organized with the generous support of the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH). Notably, 30 of the participants are scholarship recipients from the first cohort of the KOFIH-supported project, marking the first time students under this initiative have participated in this milestone event.

The ceremony was attended by representatives from central hospitals, the Ministry of Health, the University of Health Sciences (UHS), and KOFIH, alongside students from years one through three. Dr. Anousone Sisoulath, Deputy Dean of FONS, presided over the event.

This remarkable ceremony reflected five core professional values:

1. Dignity and Responsibility: A reflection on the high level of dignity and responsibility required in patient care.
2. Commitment: A strong dedication to providing the highest quality of healthcare.
3. Clinical Readiness: Preparation for the upcoming clinical practice stages.
4. Legacy and Hope: Passing on the nursing spirit to serve as a beacon of light and hope for patients.
5. Encouragement: Providing motivation to students, faculty, and their families.

🌟 Strengthening Healthcare Collaboration! 🌟
On 6 February 2026, Mahosot Hospital hosted a meaningful meeting co-chaired by Dr. Sousath VONGPHACHANH and Mr. Junho Choi Director General for International Cooperation, from the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MoHW) of Korea.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Sousath VONGPHACHANH highlighted the profound impact of the long-standing partnership with KOFIH in strengthening the capacity of healthcare professionals. He particularly noted the contribution of the Dr. LEE Jong Wook Fellowship in enhancing clinical expertise, and expressed appreciation for strategic support, including the Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) screening program for high-risk pregnancies.

Mr. Junho Choi emphasized the importance of continued collaboration in the Lao healthcare sector and shared that the fellowship has supported the training of more than 50 professionals. He also noted that the GDM initiative has been recognized as a “National Best Practice” in Lao PDR and a leading “Model Success Story” across Asia.

Following the welcoming session, hospital leadership and fellowship alumni guided delegates on a technical tour of key departments, including MCH units, the laboratory, and OPD, showcasing GDM screening protocols in practice and recent infrastructure advancements. Delegates also visited the Gastrointestinal Unit, Heart Center, and Anesthesia & Recovery Unit, where alumni shared how they have applied their training after returning from Korea.

Moving forward, KOFIH will continue to work alongside partners to provide the education, training, and support needed for Lao healthcare professionals to deliver life-saving care.
