✨ Calling for Online Volunteer – Translation Support (English to )

We are seeking 2 Online Volunteers to translate approximately 50 pages of project and communication materials from English into Lao, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and alignment with UN-Habitat guidelines. Volunteers will also review translations for consistency and contribute to project visibility while gaining exposure to development work in urbanization, basic services, and climate change.

Resilience in action! Our mission continued to the Sethamouak Area in Phine District to witness the results of the "Building Climate and Disaster Resilience" project.

This site visit allowed us to see firsthand how integrated urban planning can protect vulnerable small towns from the growing threats of floods and droughts.

💧 A Milestone for Climate Resilience: Handover Ceremony in Savannakhet

On 16 March 2026, Lao PDR took an important step toward building sustainable and resilient communities with the official handover of climate‑resilient, city‑wide water supply infrastructure in Sayphouthong and Sethamouak towns.

📈 Impact by the Numbers

This project isn't just about pipes and pumps but it’s about securing the future for the most vulnerable. The newly handed-over infrastructure includes:

• 23 Low-Income Households, now connected to safe, reliable water.
• 2 Local Schools provided with essential water services to support health and education.
• 3 Temples connected, preserving the social and cultural heritage to sustain social fabric of the community.
• Gravity-fed and pumped systems designed to withstand climate-related hazards.

🤝 Stronger Together

This achievement was made possible through strong collaboration among national, provincial, and district authorities, our partners at MPWT and NPSE and, most importantly, the local communities who played a leading role throughout the process.

With the development of two town level master plans that integrate climate risk into urban planning, we are helping ensure that these small towns are not only growing – but growing resiliently.

Strengthening Strategic Partnerships for Better Urban Future in Lao PDR

We were honored to host Ms. Kazuko Ishigaki, UN-Habitat Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, on a high-level mission to Lao PDR from 16 to 19 March 2026.

The mission focused on deepening UN-Habitat’s strategic partnership with the Government of Lao PDR to advance climate resilience and inclusive urban development.

🤝 High-Level Engagements in Vientiane

During her visit to the capital, the Regional Director engaged in a series of productive ministerial meetings with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Public Works and Transport, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to align UN-Habitat’s new Strategic Plan (2026–2029) with national priorities like the 10th NSEDP:

💧 Field Success in Savannakhet

The mission included an important visit to Savannakhet Province for the formal handover of climate-resilient city-wide water supply infrastructure in Sayphouthong and Phine districts. This Adaptation Fund-supported project now provides safe water to low-income households, schools, and temples, ensuring no one is left behind in the face of climate change.

🤝 Strengthening UN-Private Sector Partnerships in Savannakhet!

The UN Resident Coordinator’s Office and UN-Habitat held a productive consultation with the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI) in Savannakhet to strengthen subnational private sector engagement.

📍 Key Highlights:

• 🌐 Digital Future: Discussed the potential of AI and e-commerce while prioritizing digital ethics and consumer protection.
• 💧 Impact in Action: Highlighted successful PPPs, like the installation of 97 water stations in Xepon, Mueang Nong, and Pin districts, reducing the burden on women and children.
• 📈 Growth & Resilience: Discussions focused on LDC graduation readiness and helping local manufacturers meet international export standards.

UN remains dedicated to providing systematic, coordinated support that strengthens national ownership and empowers the private sector to drive a sustainable, green economy. '

Strengthening Sustainable Urban Development in Lao PDR

Over 54 participants, city leaders, urban planners, government officials, academia, civil society and development partners, came together in Vientiane on 11–12 March 2026 to shape the future of urban development in Lao PDR.

In partnership with the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) and under the ASEAN Sustainable Urbanisation Strategy (ASUS) Project - Phase II, UN-Habitat facilitated two days of hands-on dialogue and capacity building, placing people at the heart of urban change.

🏙️ 3 cities. Real priorities. Tangible progress: Kaysone Phomvihane, Luang Prabang, and Xay presented their City Technical Proposals, focusing on urban resilience, flood management, and water, waste, and sanitation services.

🤝 Stronger partnerships for stronger cities: The Development Partner Dialogue provided an opportunity for cities and partners to discuss urban development priorities and strengthen alignment between city initiatives, national development strategies, and development partner programmes.

📚 Building local capacity for lasting change: City officials and stakeholders deepened their knowledge through the Urban Planning for City Leaders Training by exploring practical approaches to people-centred urban planning, monitoring and evaluation, and climate-resilient urban development.
