“I came back not rich - but alive.”

Agnes’ journey to Lebanon was supposed to bring opportunity. Instead, she faced exploitation, isolation, and abuse under the Kafala system - a system designed to silence and control.

In this Volume Up! piece, she shares what it means to return home with nothing but her life - and the courage to speak out.

“I wanted to be a journalist or a magistrate. Domestic work was meant to open the door...
The Kafala system closed it.”

On International Domestic Workers Day, we are sharing the story of a migrant woman who left home with big dreams, only to face the harsh realities of exploitation in Lebanon.
However, her story is also one of strength and resilience, in how she find her true calling as a community leader.

Menstrual justice is a right.

This post breaks down our recommendations based on the key findings from “No Time to Bleed”, a participatory research report on how the Kafala system in Lebanon fuels menstrual injustice for migrant domestic workers.

From denying rest to withholding pads, the system is built to control. Our demands are clear:

🛑 Abolish Kafala
🏥 Recognise Menstrual Health
🧼 Ensure Access to Products
⚖️ Accountability for Employers and Agencies
📣 Center migrant voices in policy
📚 Challenge Stigma through Education

Swipe through and stand with MDWs in demanding menstrual justice for all.

The report is the result of a one-year long participatory research project, based on 90 interviews and 2 FGDs discussing period poverty and forced labour under the Kafala system.

Swipe through the carousel to see some of the reports key findings discussing the issue of time, space, access to products, access to health and the resilience within the community.

To read the full report, head to the link in our bio and share this post, to raise awareness on menstrual injustice in Lebanon.
