‏رفعت كندا العقوبات الاقتصادية الواسعة المفروضة على ⁧‫ #سوريا‬⁩، ما يفتح الباب أمام تعاون تجاري مستقبلي. وفي الوقت نفسه، لا يزال الأفراد المرتبطون بمرحلة الأسد مُدرجين على لوائح العقوبات، مع إدخال تعديلات تتيح إدراج المسؤولين عن انتهاكات جسيمة لحقوق الإنسان.

Canada has lifted broad economic sanctions on Syria—removing barriers to trade and investment and opening the door to future commercial engagement. At the same time, Assad-era individuals remain listed, and new listings target those responsible for serious human rights abuses.

Le Canada a levé de larges sanctions économiques contre la Syrie, facilitant le commerce et l’investissement. Les individus liés à l’ère Assad restent sanctionnés, et de nouvelles désignations visent les auteurs de graves violations des droits de la personne.

قبل أيام من عيد القداسة، كان لي شرف لقاء يوحنا العاشر يازجي، بطريرك أنطاكية وسائر المشرق للروم الأرثوذكس، والاستماع إلى تأملاته حول المجتمع المسيحي في #سوريا، ومفهوم المواطنة، وقناعته بضرورة تقبّل جيراننا كما هم.

Quelques jours avant Noël, j’ai eu le privilège de rencontrer John X Yazigi, Patriarche grec-orthodoxe d’Antioche et de tout l’Orient, pour échanger sur la communauté en , la citoyenneté et sa conviction que nous devons accepter nos voisins tels qu’ils sont.

Days before Christmas, I was grateful to meet John X Yazigi, Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, to hear his reflections on the community in , citizenship, and his belief that we must accept our neighbours as they are.

Ahead of his arrival, I visited Bkerké, the spiritual home the Maronite Church in Lebanon to meet His Beatitude Patriarch al-Rahi — Head of the Maronite Church and a guiding voice for Maronites in , Canada, and worldwide. Excitement is building and final touches a new underway for what promises to be a remarkable visit.

En amont de sa venue, je me suis rendu à Bkerké, siège spirituel de l’Église maronite, pour rencontrer Sa Béatitude le Patriarche al-Rahi — Chef de l’Église maronite et voix phare pour les Maronites au Liban, au Canada et dans le monde. L’enthousiasme monte, les derniers préparatifs sont en cours pour une visite qui s’annonce remarquable.

On Sunday, we gathered at the Beirut Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery to mark Remembrance Day and honour those who served and sacrificed in the cause of peace. Among the fallen rests Lance Corporal Alexander Joseph Hackett — the lone Canadian buried there from the First World War. His presence in Beirut is a quiet reminder of how conflict reaches across borders, and how service can connect distant shores.

Today, I travelled to Bcharre in northern Lebanon, where members of the Canadian Armed Forces are training and working alongside the Lebanese Armed Forces. Standing with our soldiers and partners underscored that remembrance is not only about reflecting on the past — it is about continuing the commitment to peace, resilience, and shared security in the present.

We remember their courage.
We honour their sacrifice.
And we carry their values forward.

Nous nous souviendrons d’eux.
Lest we forget.

Dimanche, nous nous sommes réunis au cimetière militaire du Commonwealth à Beyrouth afin de souligner le Jour du Souvenir et d’honorer celles et ceux qui ont servi et sacrifié pour la paix. Parmi ceux qui reposent ici se trouve le caporal Alexander Joseph Hackett — le seul Canadien enterré à Beyrouth depuis la Première Guerre mondiale. Sa présence rappelle que les conflits dépassent les frontières, et que le devoir peut lier des histoires et des peuples très éloignés.

Aujourd’hui, j’ai rejoint des membres des Forces armées canadiennes à Bcharré, dans le nord du Liban, où ils forment et travaillent aux côtés des Forces armées libanaises. Être à leurs côtés rappelle que le souvenir ne porte pas seulement sur le passé — il nous engage à poursuivre, aujourd’hui, l’œuvre de paix, de résilience et de sécurité partagée.

Nous nous souvenons de leur courage.
Nous honorons leur sacrifice.
Et nous portons leurs valeurs en avant.

Nous nous souviendrons d’eux.

A big day! Deeply honoured to be the first Canadian Ambassador since 2008 to present a copy of my credentials in , to Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani — a significant step toward renewed dialogue and engagement at a critical time for Syria.

Très honoré d’être le premier ambassadeur canadien depuis 2008 à présenter une copie de mes lettres de créance en Syrie, au ministre des Affaires étrangères Assad al-Shaibani— une étape importante pour renouveler le dialogue et l’engagement à un moment crucial pour la Syrie.

Honoured to take part in the launch of Lebanon’s first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on the missing and forcibly disappeared, supported by the Government of Canada together with UN Women Lebanon, UNDP Lebanon, SEEDS for Legal Initiatives, and Université La Sagesse.

The course addresses one of the most painful and unresolved legacies of Lebanon’s civil war — the fate of thousands who went missing or were forcibly disappeared. It helps fill a historical gap among younger generations by encouraging open dialogue on human rights, justice, and memory.

Session 7 examined this issue through a gender lens, exploring the deep psychological, social, and economic impact of loss on families, particularly on wives and children, and highlighting the essential role of women in the long struggle to uncover truth and advance peace and reconciliation.

Heureux d’avoir pris part au lancement du premier cours en ligne ouvert à tous (MOOC) au Liban sur les personnes disparues et portées disparues, appuyé par le gouvernement du Canada, en collaboration avec ONU Femmes Liban, le PNUD Liban, SEEDS for Legal Initiatives et l’Université La Sagesse.

Le cours traite de l’un des héritages les plus douloureux et non résolus de la guerre civile libanaise : le sort des milliers de personnes disparues. Il vise à combler un vide historique auprès des jeunes générations en favorisant un dialogue ouvert sur les droits de la personne, la justice et la mémoire.

La session 7 a abordé cette question sous l’angle du genre, en explorant les répercussions psychologiques, sociales et économiques de la perte sur les familles, et en soulignant le rôle essentiel des femmes dans la recherche de la vérité et la promotion de la paix et de la réconciliation.

Yesterday 🇦🇺🇨🇦🇫🇷🇳🇴🇪🇸🇬🇧 — countries that recently recognized the State of Palestine — met with Yasser Abbas, the PA President’s special representative, to discuss the Gaza ceasefire proposal, PA reform, and plans underway to disarm Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon.

Hier, 🇦🇺🇨🇦🇫🇷🇳🇴🇪🇸🇬🇧 — pays ayant récemment reconnu l’État de Palestine — ont rencontré Yasser Abbas, représentant spécial du Président de l’Autorité palestinienne, pour discuter de la proposition de cessez-le-feu à Gaza, de la réforme de l’AP et des efforts visant au désarmement des camps de réfugiés palestiniens au Liban.
