Ambassador of Sri Lanka Meets Mayor of Beirut Mr. Ibrahim Zeidan
H.E. Anura Withanage, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Lebanon, met today with Mr. Ibrahim Zeidan, Mayor and President of the Municipal Council of Beirut, for a cordial and productive discussion on strengthening cooperation between Sri Lanka and the City of Beirut.
During the meeting, Mayor Zeidan expressed his high appreciation for the Sri Lankan community and Sri Lankan workers in Lebanon, describing them as trusted, friendly, kind and hardworking members of Lebanese society. He noted the positive reputation Sri Lankan workers have earned among Lebanese citizens.
The discussion also explored opportunities for cooperation between the Beirut Municipality and Sri Lankan local government institutions, including the exchange of knowledge, experience and best practices for mutual benefit.
Mayor Zeidan also expressed interest in Sri Lanka’s skilled workforce, particularly in the IT and technical sectors. Ambassador Withanage informed him that he intends to discuss opportunities for expanding employment for qualified Sri Lankan professionals and skilled workers during his forthcoming engagements with the relevant Lebanese authorities.
Ambassador Withanage invited Mayor Zeidan to the Embassy’s Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Event in Beirut on 5 October 2026, which the Mayor kindly accepted.
The Ambassador also invited the Mayor to explore participation in EXPO 2027 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from 14–17 January 2027, and Mayor Zeidan expressed interest in exploring the possibility of attending.
The meeting concluded with a shared interest in further strengthening cooperation between Sri Lanka and the City of Beirut, particularly in municipal cooperation, tourism, trade, skilled employment and people-to-people relations.
