🇱🇰 Strengthening Engagement with the Sri Lankan Community in Lebanon

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beirut successfully organized a Special Community Awareness Programme for Sri Lankan Migrant Workers on 13 September 2026 at Hazmieh City Hall, with the participation of over 700 members of the Sri Lankan community.

The programme focused on Embassy consular services, Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) registration and benefits, and the rights and responsibilities of migrant workers. An interactive Q&A session also provided an opportunity for community members to raise their concerns, seek clarification and engage directly with Embassy officials. The programme included cultural performances and refreshments.

The Embassy extends its sincere appreciation to the Mayor of Hazmieh and members of the Municipal Council for their presence and generous support, including providing the venue free of charge. Appreciation is also extended to members of the Sri Lankan community who contributed towards the stage arrangements and food items.

The enthusiastic participation and positive response made the event a great success and reflected the importance of maintaining close engagement with the Sri Lankan community.

The Embassy remains committed to protecting the welfare and interests of Sri Lankan migrant workers and strengthening unity, communication and cooperation among Sri Lankans in Lebanon.

The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Lebanon recently met with the Ambassadors of the Netherlands and Italy to Lebanon and held warm and constructive discussions on the current situation in Lebanon, recent developments in Sri Lanka, and areas of mutual cooperation.

The discussions also touched on Sri Lanka’s economic progress and the continued support extended by the Netherlands and Italy to Sri Lanka.

Both Ambassadors recalled their previous visits to Sri Lanka with fond memories and expressed their interest in visiting the country again.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beirut appreciates the cordial engagement and looks forward to further strengthening the friendship and cooperation between Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, and Italy.

🇱🇰🤝🇱🇧 Sri Lanka and Lebanon Chambers Sign First-Ever MoU to Boost Trade & Business Ties

A historic step for Sri Lanka–Lebanon relations! The Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Beirut and Mount Lebanon (CCIA-BML) and The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) — the first ever between the two countries' chambers of commerce.

The MoU was signed in Beirut by Mr. Mohamed Choucair, Chairman of CCIA-BML, and Mr. Krishan Balendra, Chairperson of The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, following sustained facilitation by H.E. Anura Withanage, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Lebanon.

The agreement paves the way for greater trade, investment, joint ventures and business-to-business exchange between Sri Lankan and Lebanese companies, including delegations, trade fairs, and technical cooperation.

Ambassador Withanage welcomed the signing as a new platform for turning the longstanding friendship between the two nations into real economic opportunity.

Ambassador of Sri Lanka Meets Mayor of Beirut Mr. Ibrahim Zeidan

H.E. Anura Withanage, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Lebanon, met today with Mr. Ibrahim Zeidan, Mayor and President of the Municipal Council of Beirut, for a cordial and productive discussion on strengthening cooperation between Sri Lanka and the City of Beirut.

During the meeting, Mayor Zeidan expressed his high appreciation for the Sri Lankan community and Sri Lankan workers in Lebanon, describing them as trusted, friendly, kind and hardworking members of Lebanese society. He noted the positive reputation Sri Lankan workers have earned among Lebanese citizens.

The discussion also explored opportunities for cooperation between the Beirut Municipality and Sri Lankan local government institutions, including the exchange of knowledge, experience and best practices for mutual benefit.

Mayor Zeidan also expressed interest in Sri Lanka’s skilled workforce, particularly in the IT and technical sectors. Ambassador Withanage informed him that he intends to discuss opportunities for expanding employment for qualified Sri Lankan professionals and skilled workers during his forthcoming engagements with the relevant Lebanese authorities.

Ambassador Withanage invited Mayor Zeidan to the Embassy’s Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Event in Beirut on 5 October 2026, which the Mayor kindly accepted.

The Ambassador also invited the Mayor to explore participation in EXPO 2027 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from 14–17 January 2027, and Mayor Zeidan expressed interest in exploring the possibility of attending.

The meeting concluded with a shared interest in further strengthening cooperation between Sri Lanka and the City of Beirut, particularly in municipal cooperation, tourism, trade, skilled employment and people-to-people relations.

Ambassador of Sri Lanka Meets Lions Club Governor in Baabda

H.E. Anura Withanage, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Lebanon, met with Lions Club Governor Elias Antonio in Baabda, together with his assistant and other Lions Club officials.

The meeting provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the important humanitarian and community services carried out by the Lions Club in Lebanon. The Governor briefed the Ambassador on a range of charitable and medical initiatives undertaken to support communities in need.

During the meeting, Governor Antonio presented the Ambassador with the Lions Club emblem and flag as a gesture of friendship and goodwill. The Ambassador expressed his sincere appreciation for this honour and for the warm hospitality extended during the visit. He also gratefully accepted an invitation to participate in future Lions Club events in Beirut.

Of particular importance, the Lions Club generously offered to provide free medical screening services to members of the Sri Lankan migrant community in Lebanon, including eye and hearing examinations, diabetes screening, mammography, and other basic health checks.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka will coordinate with the Lions Club to organize this special community health programme. The date, time, and venue of the medical screening programme will be announced by the Embassy at a later date for the information of Sri Lankan community members.

The Ambassador expressed his sincere appreciation to Governor Antonio and the Lions Club officials for their generous humanitarian support, warm hospitality, and commitment to strengthening friendship and community cooperation.
