Initially only ‘Block A’ was constructed and for the academic year 1991-1992 it housed the first Form 1 intake of students of the South Castries Secondary School (these students graduated from GCSS in July 1996) and the first intake for the Sir Ira Simmons Secondary which was still under construction at that

time. The Principal appointed from inception was Mr. In September 1992 the Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School students and staff moved to occupy their own premises in Choc Bay and the school was renamed as the George Charles Secondary School after St. Lucia’s first Chief Minister, Sir George Frederick Lawrence Charles. The uniform was redesigned from its opening beige and brown to the familiar navy blue and white. FAREWELL MR. JOSEPH AVRIL

The George Charles Secondary School community wishes to express our deep sense of loss upon learning of the death of Mr. Joseph Avril.

Mr. Avril was a long-serving member of the Science Department specializing in Agricultural Science. He was a steady and calming influence on staff known for dedication to his subject, his strong expectations of discipline and a talent for reaching out to our more troubled students. His interventions greatly helped in steering many of our boys and girls onto a more settled and productive path.

Mr Avril’s Homeroom Students remember him with love and respect. His colleagues remember a soft-spoken man with the ability to clearly see through to the heart of a situation. When asked, he shared a wealth of experience, wisdom and good sense.

Mr. Avril recently retired, looking forward to many more years with his people and his animals. His sudden and premature death is a shock to us all and we wish to share our condolences with his family and friends.

Mr. Avril was a good man and will be missed by many, though his legacy will endure.

Gone far too soon.

It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Miss Carol Noel a former Visual Arts / Clothing and Textile teacher at the George Charles Secondary School. She died after a long battle with Cancer. Carol will be fondly remembered for her warm smile, great sense of humor and immense creative talent. She deeply cared about the students she taught and knew the power of the creative process in enriching their lives. Thank You Carol for allowing us to be a part of your journey.

Great idea young people.

08/07/2017

July 7th 2017, was the last official school day for George Charles Secondary. On July 31 2017 the school will be officially closed down. We would like to take the opportunity to thank every single person, corporate and non-profit organisation that provided us with support (both monetary and otherwise) over the life of this school. We appreciate your assistance and the thousands of young people that passed through our halls over the last 26 years became better citizens because of it.

To our students, both past and present, your school memories can never be erased by decree. A school is much more than just concrete, steel and wood. A school is the people; students, parents and teachers working together to achieve the common goal of a better country. You are forever shaped by your experiences at GCSS and your memories (both good and bad) as long as you share and cherish them, will never be lost.

To our staff, we appreciate your service and support under circumstances that at times were less than ideal. You worked, struggled and shared in the personal development of thousands of young people. The effect you have had on the lives of your students can never be quantified or fully rewarded. Simply, Thank You.

This page will still be maintained as a legacy page for former students and fans of the former George Charles Secondary School. All images, videos and posts will be kept online permanently as an archive for everyone. Present students and some staff will be merged with the Jon Odlum Secondary School to form a new school, the Stanley Jon Odlum Memorial Secondary School. There will be a new uniform and school crest. You will be pleasantly surprised when you see the final design of the crest.

So this is the end beautiful friends but if we remember the good times and bad and are better because of it, George Charles Secondary will forever remain open in our hearts.

Be good to each other.
