Castries Constituency Council

Castries Constituency Council Castries, the principal town of St. Lucia, is the seat of government and is situated at the eastern extremity of the beautiful harbour which bears its name.

In maritime circles it is better known as Port Castries. It was originally called “Carenage” or petit Cul-de-Sac because it was a land-locked harbour used for careening ships while under repairs, and in the days of sail when wind-jammers roamed the Caribbean, this safe service earned for Port Castries the descriptive Virgilian legend: “Statio Haud Malefida Carinis”. This is as true today as it ever was: a safe anchorage for ships.

The Mayor of Castries alongside a team from the Castries Constituency Council (CCC) , Saint Lucia National Housing Corporation (NHC) , and the Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority (SLSWMA) on January 7th, 2022 undertake a joint tour of problematic areas with respect to waste management within the NHC housing Complex in the city.

During the process, the team also interacted with residents and commercial establishments to receive much needed feedback and recommendations on collection action which can be taken to added concern.

The areas visited included the CDC housing areas, Barnard Hill, Darling Road , Chaussee Road. The Manager of the National Housing Authority Mrs. Sidonia Childs noted that this activity was a demonstration of how state agencies must come together to address common challenges. Mr. Cassian Henry who headed the SLSWMA’s team also saw this as a useful exercise which he indicated should be replicated in other areas.

The agencies took a number of decisions which when implemented would help address the poor waste management challenges in the areas visited.

The Castries City Constituency Council on December 31st, 2021 presented gift vouchers valued at $200.00 to single mothers on behalf of Ms. Beckeylee Alexander of Beckeylee Foundation.

Ms.Alexander is a Saint Lucian residing in New York City. She has had a history of undertaking charity events and this is inspired by her dream to make a difference. She indicated that "she remembers her childhood days as the daughter of a single mother, where persons would assist her mom and how much of a difference this made in her life and that of her siblings.

She underscored the message " that everyone can make a difference, and this she felt is reflected in the way MP for Castries Central Honorable Richard Fredrick operates as he gets things done and is driven to assist others. Ms. Alexander vowed to continue in her efforts at making a difference in the lives of her fellow Saint Lucians. She also took the opportunity to thank her friends and family members as well as the patrons to the fundraising event which made this possible.

The Castries Constituency Council sanitation staff headed by. Mr Soomer we’re hard at work on Christmas Day clearing the city of waste left back after a busy Christmas Eve. The task was made even more challenging as coconut vendors left hundreds of coconut husk which were not contained in bags behind. In spite of this workers worked tirelessly until all was disposed at the Deglos Sanitary Landfill.
We are committed to keeping the city clean as such we need generators of waste to work alongside us by managing their waste in the required way .
We take this opportunity to thank the Solid Waste Management Authority for making this possible as they made special arrangements to accommodate us at the landfill .

We take this opportunity to ask all stakeholders to play their part in sustaining a clean and healthy environment.

18/12/2021

On Monday 13 December, 2021 the annual Mayor's Mass was held at the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. The Mass is held to commemorate the elevation of the City of Castries. Castries was originally called Carenage and was named in honour of a French colonial Minister, Marshal de Castries. He was instrumental in having the island returned to the French in 1784, following the Treaty of Versailles. On March 01, 1967 on the attainment of statehood, Castries became the capital city and retained the honoured position of capital when Saint Lucia became independent in the year 1979.

Every year on December 13 the office of the Mayor of the City of Castries commemorates the elevation of the city of Castries with a celebratory mass and reception. This year is significant for the Castries Constituency Council as it also commemorates the 54th Anniversary of the elevation to a city and the appointment of its third female Mayor – Mrs. Geraldine Lendor-Gabriel.

Following mass the Office of the Mayor in collaboration with corporate partners and contributors also engaged in a food distribution program conducted on the grounds of the Castries Constituency Council. A total of 250 meals were distributed to indigent constituents of the city. Our appreciation goes out to our corporate partners, volunteers, tenants of the Castries Market Food Court, farmers, the administration, finance and support staff of the Council as well as the hard working City Police who went above the call of duty to make these events a success.
