BILD Saint Lucia Teaching life skills through sports

The Beckwith International Leadership Development (BILD) programme was established in 2008 to provide resources and build relationships that enable countries to develop sustainable national centres for leadership development (NCLD). Through sports the lives of young people and adults are enhanced through the discipline and strategies that the activities provide. BILD aims at improving cross cultu

ral awareness, inclusion, safety, creativity, leadership skills, teamwork, effective communication and above all confidence to bring up good leaders and citizens in our schools, communities and the country as a whole.

Meet Annalicia “Mona” Felicien

Mona used to teach at a school where many of the young people were ‘troubled’ and often had no parents. She felt that they didn’t necessarily want to be bad but it was the circumstances that pushed them that way. This ignited her passion for working with these types of young people as she feels that when she sees children as young as 11 being involved with drugs and being brought up by older siblings, that they just need someone and something that says ‘I am going to hold your hand and guide you’.

Through her voluntary work with a local youth organisation, Mona was trained as a BILD (Beckwith International Leadership Development programme) Local Trainer and was subsequently selected to attend the UNOSDP (United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace) Youth Leadership Camp in Florida in 2015.

From the initial training in St Lucia she was nervous when she delivered her first training as there was a lot of material and she asked herself ‘am I really capable of doing this’ but as she got into it she realised that she could do it and enjoyed it. She felt that it helped that the deliver style was not just standing up at the front but delivered through a lot of activities and using the sport and activities meant that they were always active and involved.

Mona feels that the 2 weeks in Florida have moved her onto another level as she learnt so much, especially about inclusion. Those with a disability in St Lucia are in the minority but currently there is nothing for them and Mona is confident that she could now start to include them in activities. “They may have a disability but they are able in other ways and I will be able to provide opportunities for them”

Mona wants to continue being involved in training and from there pick out other key young leaders, to train others, as young people are the best to reach out to other young people.
“This programme has gone further than what any one person can reach, and sport is a universal language. It is life changing and these lives are changing other lives”
