Dr. Travis Weekes is an award-winning Saint Lucian actor, poet, playwright, director, and cultural critic. He studied Literature at the University of the West Indies, Mona; Theatre at the Jamaica School of Drama and Cultural Studies at the Cave Campus of UWI. As an academic, Dr. Weekes focuses on the creole traditions and discourse in work of Nobel Prize winner, the late Derek Walcott. He also uses this research to develop innovative dramaturgical approaches to his own theatre practice both as a playwright and director. Dr. Weekes, currently a lecturer in Theatre at the Department of Creative and Festival Arts, UWI, Saint Augustine, has recently published two of his plays; The Fight for Belle Vue and The Field of Power.

Online Training Opportunities Extended to October 31st 2020

The Government of Saint Lucia, through the Department of Education, Innovation and Gender Relations, in collaboration with The Commonwealth of Learning is making a wide variety of university level courses via the Coursera online learning platform available FREE of costuntil December 31st 2020.

The intention is to provide free Online Training opportunities to the general population in order to improve their skills, capacities and competencies so that their their employability and productivity can be increased in light of the new normal that is being forged by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for Saint Lucia, with effect from 5 a.m. today. Tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected within the warning area within 36 hours.
On it's current track, the center of Tropical Storm Gonzalo is expected to pass near Saint Lucia on Saturday. There is still a chance that Gonzalo could become a hurricane before reaching the Windward Islands.

You are therefore encouraged to visit the St. Lucia Public Library Website where a number of features, platforms and resources are available to cater to your information, library and career needs. Content on the website include:

• FLIPSTER: a database which consists of numerous full text magazines, both current and past issues, on a wide variety of subjects such as Gardening, Health, Art, photography and religion.

• eBooks: a collection of full text classics for both adults and children.

• Rosetta Stone: a platform which provides training in different languages. We urge you to learn a new language while at home.

• Career Packages: A set of PDF resources specially designed for providing information and preparing users for different career paths such as Accounting, Business, Welding, and Engineering.

The SLNYC Arts and Culture Committee makes a call to all artists and creatives

Castries St Lucia,April 16, 2020:

The SLNYC Arts and Culture committee is embarking on an island wide
registration of all artist interested in working with the Saint Lucia National Youth Council
on future projects. We believe that as many opportunities should be provided to as many
people as possible, especially our youth. We are therefore seeking to ensure that creatives
from all over the island are registered in our database for smooth proliferation of
information. We kindly ask individuals with artistic and creative abilities to please register

Some highlighted points from the address by the Minister of Education.

-Third term will be done via virtual means and commences on 20th April 2020.

-Protocols for collection of activity sheets for various grades will be given during the week.

-The focus on Teachers being trained during a four day period in the use of digital and virtual technologies.

-75 tablets donated by UNICEF for economically challenged households.

-UNICEF to take on some of the costs of training teachers

-The OECS donated equipment that will facilitate the setting up of five streaming rooms around the island to help stream content to students..

-Digicel donated 75 miFi devices.. 25 given to sir Arthur Lewis community college..

-Teachers and principals at the various schools are in the process of indicating which students who are more in need.. to benefit from the said devices..

-Digicel has committed to training primary school teachers over a four day period in the use of Microsoft teams.

-Flow has granted free access for all students to use FLoW study...

-no new concepts will be introduced for this period. Focus on topics that have been dealt with in previous terms.

-Common entrance exams are currently being revised to ensure it is aligned with the areas of the curriculum taught in grade five and first term of grade six..
Parents won’t have to contend with teaching new topics..

-Parents of children at secondary schools should ensure their child creates a gmail account. Due to the concept that classrooms will be hosted using google classrooms/suites.

-Some form of nutritional support will be provided to underprivileged children who used to be fed at school.

-CXC indicates that all testing will be via digital mode. E-testing mode.

-CSEC/Cape.. government agreed to proceed with option of exams in September to October 2020. Marking of Sba’s between September and November and publication of results in December.

-10 MiFi devices were issued to students inthe south and the remaining to other locations..
each device up to six users can access the internet at one time..

-Students can access content on Sir Arthur Lewis domains free of charge..

-Training for college teachers using web conferring tools. Teaching with moodle platforms..streaming from Facebook..

-More than 80% students are enrolled on the salcc e-learning platform and are engaging with lecturers and faculty.
96% of faculty are using e-e-learning platforms.
84% of salcc courses for semester two are now online.

-NSDC to use ZOOM conferencing...
Lessons to be delivered via email as well..
