The UWP was the vehicle to take Saint Lucia in Associated Statehood on March 1, 1967 and Independence twelve years later. With its theme Unity, Work and Progress the party led Saint Lucia for fifteen unbroken years from 1964 to 1979. When the United Workers Party assumed office in 1964 there were only three secondary schools with a total compliment of less than three thousand pupils. The UWP immed

iately began a meticulous orchestration of a programme to expand and modernize the education system to make it more responsive to the country’s needs. The UWP government also focused on expanding the island’s road network and improving the water supply system and its attendant benefit of reducing meaningfully the incidence of bilharzia.

While any measure that encourages the transition to renewable energy is welcome, we must also recognize the economic realities facing many Saint Lucian families.

A five-year exemption/zero rated VAT on photovoltaic and solar panel components does not address the immediate challenges confronting households across the country. Many families continue to struggle to put food on the table, pay their water and electricity bills, and cope with the rising cost of living.

The transition to renewable energy should be part of a broader, long-term strategy, but at this time, the government's priority should be providing meaningful and immediate relief to the people of Saint Lucia. 🇱🇨

With the current state of our country and economy, many Saint Lucians are struggling to provide for their families. While the transition to renewable energy and the removal of taxes on photovoltaic and solar systems may be beneficial, the reality is that many households simply cannot afford such an investment at this time.

What our people need now is immediate relief from the rising cost of living through lower water and electricity bills and the removal of the burdensome 2.5% tax that continues to place unnecessary pressure on our citizens. 🇱🇨

When we make recommendations and offer solutions to the government, we do so for the benefit and well-being of the people of Saint Lucia.

The development and prosperity of our nation will always remain a top priority. 🇱🇨

The burdens imposed by this government, including the 2.5% levy and the approved increases in water and electricity rates, should have been carefully considered to ease the pressure on citizens during these difficult economic times.

The people of Saint Lucia simply cannot afford these additional financial burdens. 🇱🇨

Is this the type of leadership St. Lucia needs today?

Think carefully before you answer. Set yellow and red aside for this exercise.

Any tax relief is welcome, including on solar panels. However, Saint Lucians still need real relief at the fuel pumps, grocery stores and on essential services such as water and electricity.

We must also create sustainable employment opportunities that improve household incomes and make life more affordable. These bread-and-butter issues must be a national priority.

When we were in government, the United Workers Party showed what it truly means to put people first. During the pandemic, the UWP provided Electricity Assistance Support to more than 6,000 households for six months, helping families cope during one of the most difficult periods in our nation's history.

That's more than a policy; it's compassion in action. While others make promises, the UWP delivered. 🇱🇨

I believe that the government must focus on long-term investments and create opportunities that allow the people of Saint Lucia to benefit from renewable energy initiatives.

If individuals choose to invest in a photovoltaic system or solar panels, there should be measures in place to make these technologies more accessible and affordable for all. 🇱🇨

The UWP is deeply concerned by the violence at the Babonneau J'ouvert jump up, which left several people injured, one seriously.

We wish the injured a full recovery and thank the police, emergency responders, and bystanders who assisted.

Community celebrations should mean joy and togetherness, not violence and injury. Incidents like this raise serious questions about security and crowd control at large public events, and we'll be seeking answers from the relevant authorities.

Our thoughts are with those affected and their families.

Constituency Woes

SOUFRIERE WATER ISSUES- What is causing it. When will it be resolved?

Written by a resident of Soufriere

For many months now, the water supply to the town has been adversely affected and residents and businesses have endured this crisis very quietly. There hasn't seem to be any formal statement or update from WASCO, the Parliamentary Representative Office or the Constituency Council on the water woes plaguing the town.

Soufriere is an economic and tourism hub. Months of water shortages affects businesses and daily operations and service.

Hotels, small businesses residents and other operators have been required to truck water as far as the south of the island. This results in higher operational costs and this also affects the tourist experience at Airbnb establishments.

It is noticeable that 800/1000 Gallons Plastic Water Tanks are being placed at locations around the town for residents to fill their containers.

It is imperative that the authorities clarify the following:

Was it the dry season that created this water shortage problem for the town?

Is there an issue from the Diamond water supply which was consistent for decades supplying the town centre and its environs such as Wingsville, Church Street, Market Road, Barons Drive etc?

Is the entire Soufriere Constituency (not Fond St. Jacques) predominantly dependent only on the supply from Ruby Water Supply which has its limitations of storage?

Will the beleaguering water issue be resolved before the commencement of the new academic year?

What is the status of the project from Bouton to supply Colombette which commenced in 2022, with the laying of a 4” line? It appears to be halted mid-way to Colombette. If this project was completed, it could have helped with supply since Wasco is facilitating water trucks from the Bouton intersection off the Canaries system.

Upon research, it was indicated that during the reconstruction of the Zenon Road Project in 2020, WASCO installed new piping with the intention of an additional water source from upper Zenon which could supply New Development, Cressland and Zenon. What is the status on this new undertaking?

Soufriere has water available to alleviate the crisis being faced. It is important that this issue be given urgent attention and proper management for the sustainability of the social and economic life of the community and also to mitigate health related risks.
