A discussion on reaching into a Voluntary Price Agreement to bring all actors in the poultry sector including maize farmers, traders,egg and chicken producers and feed millers to fix prices for value chain of each sector was held at the Presidential Secretariat on January 23.
The discussion was chaired by Dr. Suren Batagoda, President’s Advisor on Food Security. The Maize Producers Association, Animal Feed Millers Association, Maize Wholesale Traders, Poultry Producers Association, Large Scale Poultry Traders Association, Small Scale Poultry Traders Association and Bakery Association participated in the discussion.
Dr. Batagoda emphasized the need of all stakeholders joining together to reach into a price agreement to uplift the poultry sector to make it sustainable.
“After fulfilling the local annual demand of six billion eggs, the President wants to make the poultry sector more sustainable to export chicken and eggs to other countries in future,” he said.
The members of these associations, who requested not to issue gazettes to control egg prices highlighted the plight of the poultry industry which is mainly depended on the private sector.
They expressed their willingness to reach to a collective agreement to control prices on eggs depending on the supply and demand on eggs.
“Sri Lanka’s poultry sector is self-sustainable and there is no requirement to import eggs,” they said while commending the government efforts to bring all stakeholders to a common platform to resolve the issues in the sector.

A discussion to formulate a National Food Security and Nutrition Strategy and Action Plan was held between Dr. Suren Batagoda, President's Advisor on Food Security and Prof. Ranjith Senarathne, Chairman of the National Science Foundation (NSF).
Dr Sepalika Sudasinghe, Director General of the NSF, Additional Secretaries Jayampathy and Dr. Sulakshana Jayawardena were also took part in the discussion.

Dr. Suren Batagoda, President’s Advisor on Food Security met Anita Hirsch, the Deputy Regional director Asia and the Pacific of the World Food Program (WFP) and had a fruitful discussion on wide range of issues related to food and nutrition sector in Sri Lanka.
Dr. Batagoda explained the comprehensive approach implemented by the government with the contribution of all the stakeholders, including the President to private sector to the ordinary villager, to enhance food security and nutrition level in the country with the partnership of the WFP.
Ms. Hirsch commended the government’s approach in food security and assured fullest support under WFPs programs.
Dr. Batagoda requested the WFP’s assistance to train 100,000 young entrepreneurs, who have been selected at all Grama Niladhari Divisions, to uplift their living standards and also to set up 10,000 People’s Shops to create a village level platform for growers to sell their cultivations.
Dr. Sulakshana Jayawardena, Additional Secretary of the Presidential Secretariat, sought assistance to launch a program to minimize post-harvest lost and enhance inland fishery sector as many tank were underutilized due to financial constraints.
Abdur Rahim Siddiqui, WFP Country Representative, mentioned about the WFP’s support to 1.4 million severely food insecure families and also providing ‘Threeposha’ for one million children and pregnant mothers out of 6.3 million food insecure families in the country.
He also assured the continued support under the WFP’s plan for next five years.

The Cabinet has approved the proposal presented by President Ranil Wickremesinghe to provide 10 kg of rice to 02 million low-income families, including Samurdhi beneficiaries, for two months.

For this 40,000 metric tons of rice is required and the government plans to purchase 61,600 metric tons of paddy to fullfil this need, the Presidential Media Division said in a statement.

It further states that these programs will be implemented through district secretaries and divisional secretaries with the help of small and medium scale paddy mill owners.
