Memories From The Margin

Over the last few weeks, we have been revisiting our approach and engaging in conversations with other academics and experts in strengthening our methodology. In the coming weeks, we hope to go back to our co-researchers to design together the next phase of the project, focusing primarily on higher-level policy influencing. In the next few posts, we will be outlining the key issue areas identified in the policy brief.

In the aftermath of the official closure of phase i of our project, our co-researchers continue to engage in documenting their narrative experiences using photography. Here we have images from the annual Periyasami temple festival held from 26th - 29th August in Verugal. We are thrilled to see the continued engagement and look forward to sharing more of the Palankudi story with you.

"From the Margins of War: The Post War Experience of the Palankudi Community", a policy brief by CEPA’s Social Cohesion thematic was launched on 08.08.2022. The policy brief outlines structural and institutional issues faced by the Palankudi community, with emphasis on the need for institutional recognition for indigenous rights and the Palankudi identity. The brief supplements the on-going "memories from the margin" photographic exhibition. Access it at:

This research project, titled Memories from the Margin: The Voices of Coastal Indigenous Communities was designed to extend the conversation on post-war reconciliation to include marginalised voices and thereby contribute to an intersectional understanding of peace.

On our second field visit, we trained our co-researchers on the methodology; taking photographs, conducting KPIs (Key Person Interviews), and documenting their narrative history (most importantly, getting consent forms signed!). Photos taken thereafter were curated in the following weeks. The research team of the Social Cohesion thematic of CEPA added a layer of analysis by triangulating the findings and with existing literature and key concepts. The exhibition thus put together was taken back to the community last weekend. Our second exhibition was held in Verugal with our co-researchers and village elders present.
