Under the guidance of Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ndu psc IG, Commander of the Army and the supervision of Mrs Swendrini Rodrigo, President of the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU), a series of Dansal programmes were conducted from 30 to 31 May 2026 to mark the islandwide Vesak Festival.

With the full contribution of the ASVU, a rice Dansal was conducted along the route leading to the Army Headquarters Vesak Zone, providing meals to a large number of devotees visiting the Vesak premises during the two day event.

In parallel with the rice Dansal, the ASVU, in collaboration with Fonterra Brands Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, organised a hot milk coffee Dansala on 30 May 2026 for more than 5,000 devotees who visited the Vesak Zone situated along Bauddhaloka Mawatha.

Furthermore, on 31 May 2026, a cream corn soup Dansala was conducted at the Commanderโ€™s Residence, Colombo 05, with the generous support of the Maha Karuna Buddhist Society of Singapore

The Viru Kekulu Pre-School, Ipalogama celebrated Vesak Poya Day on 27 May 2026 at the pre-school premises.

This colourful occasion was graced by the Venerable Thero of Ranajayapura Kande Viharaya, who visited the children of the Viru Kekulu Pre-School, Ipalogama and shared teachings on the significance of Vesak, encouraging them to follow the Buddha's teaching.

Viru Kekulu Pre School Diyatalawa conducted a Vesak programme on 27 May 2026 in commemoration of the sacred Vesak Poya Day.

As part of this programme, children observed Sil at Kahagolla Buddhist Monastery.

The programme helped children gain an understanding of important Buddhist values such as kindness, discipline and compassion from an early age.

The Viru Kekulu Pre School, Anuradhapura celebrated its Vesak programme on 27 May 2026 at the pre-school premises.

As part of the programme, the children participated in a Buddha Pooja. They also listened to a Dhamma sermon, followed by an almsgiving programme for the children.

The event helped to instil Buddhist values and traditions among the young students.

Mrs. Swendrini Rodrigo, President of the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU), conducted an inspection visit to Viru Kekulu Preschool - Galle on 25 May 2026.

During the visit, the President of ASVU inquired about the wellbeing of the children studying at Viru Kekulu Preschool - Galle and observed the teaching methods and subject related activities. She also provided instructions regarding future modifications, renovation work and the improvement of facilities.

A meaningful Dhamma sermon was delivered by Venerable Nirodha Mehenin Wahansรฉ from Kandy, sharing the noble teachings of the Supreme Buddha in a gentle and inspiring manner, bringing peace and serenity to everyone present.

The children were also given the opportunity to participate in a simple meditation programme designed to calm their minds and nurture loving-kindness, compassion, discipline and wholesome thoughts. This programme encouraged the children to view the world with kindness and understanding. Thereafter, the children were introduced to the noble virtue of generosity through a charitable almsgiving programme that promoted humanity, kindness and the joy of sharing with others.

A certificate awarding ceremony was held for the spouses of officers, soldiers, and lady soldiers who successfully completed a training programme conducted by the IICA Institute on 23 May 2026 at Army Headquarters.

During the event, certificates were presented to 18 participants who successfully completed the Ayurvedic Beauty Product Manufacturing Course conducted by the IICA Institute. The certificates were awarded by Mrs. Swendrini Rodrigo, President of the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU) and Mrs. Samindi Wickramaratne former Chairperson of the Commando Regiment Seva Vanitha Branch.

This initiative was undertaken by the President of the ASVU to enhance the economic stability and wellbeing of families by introducing new self-employment opportunities.

Members of the ASVU, Senior Officers, Officers, and Other Ranks participated in the event.
