The Reality Behind S*x Work: It’s Not “Easy Money”

One of the biggest misconceptions about s*x work is that it requires no investment — that s*x workers “just want money for free.” That's not true!

💡 The reality is:
✔️ S*x workers invest time, energy, and emotional labor every single day.
✔️ We invest in our safety — from paying for secure spaces, transportation, health check-ups, and protection.
✔️ We invest in our appearance and presentation — clothing, makeup, grooming, healthcare, everything society demands from us to even be accepted in our work.
✔️ We invest in mental resilience — managing stigma, discrimination, and sometimes even violence, just to survive.

S*x work is not free. S*x work is not effortless.
It is labor — just like any other work. And it deserves the same recognition, respect, and rights.

✊ Stop dismissing our struggles.
✊ Stop spreading false assumptions.
✊ Respect s*x workers as workers.

On 16th September 2025, Abhimani Women’s Collective together with DAST held a meaningful police training at Renuka City Hotel to build awareness on the rights of s*x workers.

A total of 25 police officers from the Colombo and Kelaniya divisions, including six OIC officers, joined the dialogue. The session was gracefully facilitated by Dr. Janaki Vidanapathirana, Director – Planning, Ministry of Health.

The discussion focused on recognizing s*x workers’ rights, understanding their daily struggles, and addressing violations faced at the hands of law enforcement. This was an important step toward fostering empathy, justice, and respect.

A high-level advocacy meeting organized by the Red Umbrella Network and the CARE Consortium was held on 20th May 2025 at the Sheraton Hotel, Colombo.

The event was convened to launch the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) analysis conducted by the Red Umbrella Network and the CARE Consortium.

The meeting brought together high-level stakeholders working on human rights, health, women's rights, and feminist issues in Sri Lanka.

Key findings from the GBV analysis on female s*x workers and LGBTIQ individuals were presented and discussed during the session.

On 22nd April 2025, Abhimani Women’s Collective collaborated with Trans Equality Trust hosted a Traditional Sweet-Meat Table for female and transgender s*x workers from the Colombo and Gampaha areas.

This special event was part of our monthly Community Kitchen initiative and was held at the Trans Equality Trust Drop-In Center in Peliyagoda.

With an array of delicious Sri Lankan sweet meats on display, the gathering provided not only nourishment but also a space for connection, celebration, and community support. Events like this reflect our ongoing commitment to creating safe, inclusive, and supportive environments for s*x workers.

On March 3, 2025, the Red Umbrella Network commemorated International S*x Workers' Day with a vibrant gathering of 100 female and transgender s*x workers from Colombo and Gampaha Districts.

The event, held at Janaki Hotel, Colombo, featured a range of engaging activities, including interactive games, a love letter campaign, and an art therapy session, fostering a sense of empowerment, solidarity, and creative expression within the community.
