Sri Lanka National Library Services Board was established in 1970 under the Act No. 17 of the Parliament of Sri Lanka. The prime objective of this institution was the fulfillment of the long felt need for a National Library. Consequently all other activities of the board were geared towards the achievement of this goal. The National Library of Sri Lanka was set up by the Sri Lanka National Library
and Documentation Services Board and was opened to the nation of Sri Lanka on the 27th of April, 1990. Under the Act No. 51 of 1998, Sri Lanka National Library Services board was renamed as National Library and Documentation Services Board and National Library of Sri Lanka was renamed as National Library and Documentation Centre. What We Do
The National Library is mainly a Research and a Reference library and it is technically a library of last resort. It intends to provide library resources as well as information to all Sri Lankans through the National Library, library networks, information centres and resource centres. The library has five floors with a floor area of 11,250 sq m. and 866 meters of shelving. There are three reading areas with a seating capacity for 320 readers and several special study rooms, air conditioned auditorium with 120 seats and a conference room with 30 seats. The library has space to accommodate around one million volumes of library material. The current library martial stock of approximately over 600,000 volumes will form the nucleus of the future national collection. The National Library and Documentation Centre comprises of six divisions namely, Acquisitions, Reader Services, Bibliographic Control, Information Technology, Conservation and Preservation and Library Research.
