🌍 𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚'𝐬 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 – 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔

Sri Lanka’s external sector continued to reflect the impact of developments in the Middle East, with the current account recording its third consecutive monthly deficit.

Key highlights:

📊 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭 deficit stood at US$ 149 mn in June 2026.

📦 Cumulative 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭 widened to US$ 5.5 bn during the first half of 2026, as import expenditure outpaced export earnings.

⛽ 𝐅𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 moderated from recent peaks, while motor vehicle import expenditure declined compared to the previous month.

🏝️ 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐬 declined amid continued regional tensions, with tourism earnings estimated at US$ 151 mn in June 2026.

💸 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬’ 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 remained resilient, increasing by 9.3% (y-o-y) to US$ 695 mn in June, with cumulative inflows reaching US$ 4.6 bn during the first half of 2026.

📈 The 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 recorded a net foreign inflow during the month.

💰 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬 stood at US$ 6.5 bn at end June 2026, despite sizeable external debt service payments.

💱 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚 𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 by 7.8% against the US dollar on a year-to-date basis by end July 2026, with exchange rate volatility easing following recent policy measures.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has released its latest 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 (MOR), providing insights into monetary and foreign exchange operations undertaken to implement monetary policy under the Flexible Inflation Targeting (FIT) framework.

𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤

The 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 based headline inflation increased to 7.3 per cent in July 2026.

𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐓𝐈 𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 decreased by US dollars 12.18 and US dollars 9.88 per barrel, respectively, compared to a week ago.

𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐀𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐞 for the week ending 31 July 2026 increased to 10.67 per cent.

During the week, 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐲𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐬 remained broadly stable in both primary and secondary markets and 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐬 remained broadly stable in the secondary market.

Year to date 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚 𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐞 against the US dollar was 7.8 per cent as of 31 July 2026.

The 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬 were provisionally estimated at US dollars 6,458 mn as at end June 2026.

கொழும்பு நுகர்வோர் விலைச் சுட்டெண்ணினை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்ட முதன்மைப் பணவீக்கமானது 2026 யூனின் 6.8 சதவீதத்திலிருந்து யூலையில் 7.3 சதவீதத்திற்கு அதிகரித்தது. உணவு மற்றும் உணவல்லா வகை முறையே 6.3 சதவீதத்தினையும் 7.8 சதவீதத்தினையும் பதிவுசெய்தன.

CCPI based headline inflation increased to 7.3% in July 2026 from 6.8% in June 2026. Food and Non-food inflation recorded 6.3% and 7.8%, respectively.

📊 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬' 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 — 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔

Sri Lanka’s 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬’ 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 rose to 60.0 in June 2026, signalling continued growth in the sector. Most of this activity was driven by projects already awarded in earlier months

📌 The 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐎𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 continued to expand, though at a slower pace than May.
📌 The 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 rose further as firms continued hiring, though a shortage of skilled workers remains a concern.
📌 The 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 increased alongside broader construction activity, though bitumen shortages are still holding back progress.
📌 The 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬' 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 remained elevated due to ongoing supply disruptions.
