On the 2nd day of October 2002, a set of young people were seen at the Lions activity centre Colombo 7.The Inauguration of the Leo club of Colombo Wekanda was taking place at the venue. Under the patronage of Lion Dicson Jayasinghe, His son together with some of his friends and few senior Leos of the district 306C namely Leos Janaka, Tuan , Madhawa and Bhagya were among the charter members of the
club. The Charter President was Leo Nalaka Liyanage, Charter secretary Leo Janaka Peiris who was serving the district as the dist.Vice president and the Charter Treasurer Leo Lahiru Jayasinghe and the first ever Leo Advisor Lion Asiri jayasinghe. That day they would have never thought, that this young and humble club would bring the greatest ever fame to Mother Lanka through Leoism. During the past 9 Years the Leo Club of Colombo Wekanda has won countless local and international achievements. within the first six years of the clubs history it had achieved the club excellence award twice and had produced 3 “international Leo of the year” recipients and many International banner patches and certificates, but the most prestigious award ever is the Academy award for the best Leo club in the world, which was received by Leo janaka Peiris at the International Lions convention held in Boston, USA. And yet another achievement for the club was that it had produced four District presidents and a multiple president and up to date the club has produced 6 vice district presidents, Leo Dhanushka Ramanayake currently serves the district as Vice president. The secret behind this is the blend of the club’s membership, a mix of university students, school leavers and executives at pvt organizations and now the club consists of members who are involved with the government activities too. In the beginning the club was represented by 10 Head prefects of leading Colombo schools, 12 past Leo club presidents, and the experience which they had played a major role in bringing the club towards glory in all the endeavors which the club had taken on its path. And further one of our own Charter Leos Lion Tuan is currently appointed by the Governor as the District chairperson for leos for the 2nd consecutive year. The year 2009/2010 Leos witnessed one of the most glamorous Leo conferences in the history of Leoism, and at the conference The Leo club of Colombo Wekanda was nominated in 32 out of 36 categories and the club walked away with 14 winner awards, 5 first runner up and 6 second runner up awards, the value of projects conducted is more than 12 million rupees and none of the other clubs in the district were even close in achieving such number of awards in the conference which made the Leo Club of Colombo Wekanda winner “ best club in conducting service projects”. And adding to that Leo Dhanushka Ramanayake was adjudged as the Leo of the year. Concluding, the path was never a bed of roses for the Leos of Wekanda, it was always the dedication and love for Leoism that paved the way for these young set of youth to achieve success individually and to the movement, yet another dedicated Leo filled with sheer will power takes the lead of the Leo Club of Colombo Wekanda, Leo Sashendra who is a law student had witnessed the clubs glory and will be taking the club towards further heights with all the blessings of all who love social service and who have been past giants of Wekanda, “Together Everyone Achieves More..”
