Biodiversity of Bellanwila-Attidiya Sanctuary 🌿 Bellanwila-Attidiya Sanctuary: A Haven for Urban Wildlife 🌿

Bellanwila-Attidiya Wildlife Sanctuary is a well-known urban wetland area, located in the heart of Colombo. Spanning over 372 hectares, it is a precious ecosystem rich in biodiversity that is unique to marshes and swamps. Declared as a sanctuary in 1990 by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Bellanwila-Attidiya is known for its contribution to the ecosystem and managing floods around Colombo area.

World Wetlands Day, celebrated on the 2nd of February each year, is an initiation to remind us the importance of protecting wetlands worldwide.

This year, the Department of Wildlife Conservation, in collaboration with several other organizations, conducted a program to celebrate this date of importance in a meaningful way. The programme, which was held at the Bellanwila-Attidiya Sanctuary and the adjoining Sobaketha premises, consisted of awareness sessions, exhibition stalls, and other engaging activities.

Bellanwila-Attidiya Sanctuary serves as a stay away from home for migratory birds in the migrating season.

Situated along the Central Asian Flyway, wetlands all around Sri Lanka -this urban wetland area being no exception, provides migratory species like groups of the colourful Blue-tailed Bee-eater a refuge in the winter season.

Herons, another common sighting at Bellanwila-Attidiya Sanctuary, are mostly found wading in the marshes and surrounding waterholes. With the flight feathers mostly being of a different shade than that of when they are perched, it is a must-have sighting for rookie birdwatchers.
