Ambassador Wiebe de Boer today paid floral tribute to Dutch victims of World War II rested on Sri Lankan soil at Jawatta Cemetery in Colombo to mark National Remembrance Day 15 August 1945. It marks On this day, the Kingdom of the Netherlands commemorates all victims of the war against Japan and Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies during 1941-1945.

One of the key priorities for the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Sri Lanka is promoting and protecting Human Rights. We focus specifically on Equal Rights for Women and Girls, Equal Rights for LGBTIQ+’s and Freedom of Expression, internet freedom and independent journalism in Sri Lanka. This year, following an open call, we have decided to fund six projects to advance these rights across Sri Lanka with targeted communities across the country. Last Thursday (23), Ambassador Wiebe de Boer signed agreements with representatives of beneficiary organizations for these projects to be implemented during 2026-2027.

A Handbook for Professional Journalism: Reporting on Women, Girl-children, and LGBTQIA+ individuals in Sri Lanka was presented to Hon Dr Kaushalya Ariyarathne, MP, Deputy Minister of Mass Media by at the Ministry of Mass Media last week. The handbook was developed under an embassy funded project implemented by the Verite Research. This handbook focuses on two identity groups that who are repeatedly affected by the way they are covered in Sri Lankan media: women and girl-children, and LGBTQIA+ individuals. It provides practical tools to help uphold standards consistently and minimize avoidable harm, even under tight deadlines. The handbook can be accessed in through the below link.
