challenges so that all Sri Lankans can enjoy better living conditions. Three years later on 14th December 1955 Sri Lanka was admitted as a member state of the UN. Since then, the UN has been contributing to Sri Lanka’s development, by supporting livelihoods, working in children’s education, improving maternal health, focusing on rural development and responding to and helping communities recover from disasters. In addition, the UN also supports the promotion of human rights and works with the Government in designing and implementing social and economic measures to help eradicate poverty. The UN is in Sri Lanka by explicit agreement with the government. All its work, including disbursement of funds, is supervised by line ministries as agreed in a Memorandum of Understanding.
