Feasibility Study for Ruwanpura Railway Line Underway.
```````````````````````````````````````´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´
It was revealed on June 16, during a special meeting held at the Ratnapura District Secretariat that one month has passed since the commencement of the feasibility study for the Ruwanpura railway line from Avissawella to Ratnapura.
The meeting was co-chaired by the Governor of the Sabaragamuwa Province, Mrs. Champa Janaki Rajaratne, and Ratnapura District Member of Parliament and Co-Chairman of the Ratnapura District Coordinating Committee, Mr. Shastha Padmakumara.
Speaking at the meeting, MP Shastha Padmakumara stated that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has allocated LKR 500 million through the budget for the year 2026 to commence work on the Ruwanpura railway line.
Accordingly, the Member of Parliament further noted that the feasibility study required to reconstruct the railway line from Avissawella to Ratnapura has already been assigned to Resource Development Consultants (RDC).
Additionally, the MP mentioned that the Department of Sociology at the University of Colombo will commence a social survey next week regarding the communities residing along the railway line.
He further stated that these studies will be completed expeditiously, and the railway line will be constructed in the coming years to allow trains to run up to Ratnapura without causing prejudice or harm to any party.
The railway line, for which the feasibility study has begun, was originally constructed from Colombo to Opanayaka via Avissawella, Eheliyagoda, Kuruwita, Ratnapura, Pelmadulla, and Kahawatta.
The train that operated on this route ceased operations between Avissawella and Opanayaka 55 years ago.
Currently, the land where the tracks ran and the associated building network are being utilized by both the private and public sectors.
The discussion was attended by numerous state institutions, including the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council, local government authorities, and Divisional Secretariats of Eheliyagoda, Kuruwita, Ratnapura, Pelmadulla, and Kahawatta, alongside the Ratnapura District Secretariat and the Sri Lanka Police.
Officials from the Department of Railways, including the Director of the Colombo Suburban Railway Project, Mr. Nimal Thakkaweera, also participated to support the reconstruction plans of this railway line.
Dr. Janaka Senaratne, Ratnapura District MP and Chairman of the Transport Committee, also expressed his views at the event.
Ratnapura District Secretary Mr. Lalith Ananda and several others were also present at the occasion.
