Thumpane Division is located in the North West part of the Central province in between the longitudes 7’20-7’25 and latitudes 80’25-80’35. In the north it is bounded by the administrative border of Poojapitiya divisional secretariat and District border of Kurunegala, in the east by the administrative borders of Poojapitiya and Harispattuwa divisional secretariats, in the south by the administrativ
e borders of Harispattuwa and Hatharaliyadda divisional secretariats and in the west by the administrative border of Hatharaliyadda divisional secretariat and District border of Kurunegala. Thumpane Divisional Secretariat was included 40 GS Divisions by the administrative separation done in 1975.Previously both Thumpane and Hatharaliyadda divisional secretariats were as one and separated in 1994 aiming a comfortable administration. Present formation of Thumpane Divisional Secretariat was executed in year 2000 containing 67 GS Divisions. There are so many popular folk stories or beliefs, historical happenings and geographical signs regarding derive of the name THUMPANE. Some believes that this name is developed with meaning of (Three Rocks) because this area is surrounded by three rocks namely KOBBEYGALA, BOLAGALA and ALAGALLA. Another story named GAJABA STORY says this name derives from the settlement of people brought from India by the king Gajaba around (Thun Panaha – Three fifties “150”). The total area of Thumpane Divisional Secretariat is about 63.26 Km2 and owns 67 GS Divisions and 120 villages, settlements.
