**World Hypertension Day 2026 Awareness Programme**

In commemoration of **World Hypertension Day 2026**, the Health Promotion Unit of National Hospital Kandy successfully organized an awareness programme in collaboration with the Srilanka Hypertension Society for the hospital staff under this year's theme:

**“Controlling Hypertension Together: Check Your Blood Pressure Regularly, Defeat the Silent Killer.”**

More than **120 staff members** participated in this educational session, which aimed to enhance awareness of hypertension and its prevention. The main lecture was delivered by **Dr. Kumuduni Jayasinghe, Visiting Physician, National Hospital Kandy**, who provided a comprehensive and informative presentation highlighting the importance of early identification and regular screening, evidence-based medical management, risk factors, and healthy lifestyle modifications for the prevention and control of hypertension.

The programme concluded with an engaging **Question & Answer session**, addressing common misconceptions and frequently asked questions regarding high blood pressure.

Participants highly appreciated the programme and shared overwhelmingly positive feedback. Many expressed the need for more health awareness initiatives of this nature in the future, reflecting the growing interest in preventive healthcare and health promotion among hospital staff.

An Inspiring Journey Against Leukaemia

In 2022, shortly after entering the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, a young medical student was diagnosed with one of the most aggressive forms of blood cancer, Early T-cell Precursor Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ETP-ALL).

His journey was far from easy. During chemotherapy at National Hospital Kandy, he developed severe COVID-19 pneumonitis during the height of the pandemic. Despite life-threatening complications, he recovered and achieved an excellent response to treatment.

With the support of generous donors, old boys' associations, and Sri Lankans living overseas, he underwent a bone marrow transplant in India. Due to financial constraints, he returned to Sri Lanka soon after the transplant and was admitted to National Hospital Kandy, where post-transplant complications, including graft-versus-host disease and viral infections, were successfully managed.

After returning to medical school, signs of leukaemia unfortunately reappeared. The best treatment option was a Donor Lymphocyte Infusion (DLI). However, travelling overseas again or private sector treatment was not affordable, and this procedure had never been performed in a government hospital in Sri Lanka.

Rather than giving up, the teams at National Hospital Kandy worked together to make it possible. Cells were collected again from his sister, processed, and infused back into him. Following treatment, he developed significant immune-related complications, but these were successfully managed by the hospital team.

Today, just three months later, he has undetectable leukaemia and has returned to his clinical training.

This is more than a patient's success story. It is a story of courage, family support, innovation, and teamwork. It highlights what can be achieved within Sri Lanka's public healthcare system when dedicated professionals work together for the benefit of their patients.

A heartfelt thank you to the courageous young donor, his sister, whose selfless act made this possible, and who is doing well today. Special thanks also to the hospital administration for providing the support and freedom needed to pursue innovative treatments for patients.

Most importantly, congratulations to the entire Haemato-Oncology, Transfusion Medicine, Anaesthetic, Intensive Care, Nursing, Laboratory, and Support Services teams at National Hospital Kandy. Together, they have not only changed one life but have also opened new possibilities for future patients across Sri Lanka.

Another Inspiring Story of Hope and Survival

Five years ago, a young woman was admitted to the Haemato-Oncology Unit at National Hospital Kandy with a diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML), an aggressive blood cancer. At the time of diagnosis, she and her family faced an uncertain future and very little hope.

What followed was a remarkable journey of courage, determination, and resilience.

With the unwavering support of her family, the generosity of the community, and the dedicated care provided by the teams at National Hospital Kandy, she fought through intensive treatment and numerous challenges. Step by step, she overcame a disease that once threatened her life.

Today, five years later, she is living proof that blood cancer is not always the end of the story. She has returned to her life, regained her strength, and become a source of inspiration for others facing similar battles.

What makes her story even more special is her desire to give back. Having experienced the fear and uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis herself, she now spends her time encouraging patients and families who are beginning their own journeys. Her message is simple but powerful: do not lose hope, seek proper treatment early, and trust the process.

Her story highlights the importance of early diagnosis, access to specialist care, family support, and teamwork. It is also a testament to what can be achieved through Sri Lanka's public healthcare system when patients, families, healthcare professionals, and communities work together.

To those currently facing a diagnosis of blood cancer, her journey offers an important message:

Leukaemia is a serious disease, but many patients can achieve long-term survival with timely diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and continued support. Hope is always stronger when combined with action.

Today, she stands not only as a survivor but also as an inspiration to others—a reminder that even the darkest chapters can lead to new beginnings.

**Welcoming Our New Nursing Officers**

National Hospital Kandy proudly welcomed 20 newly appointed Nursing Officers who have commenced their professional careers as Registered Nurses after successfully completing their internship training.

These graduates from Allied Health Science Faculties of several state universities across Sri Lanka have joined the National Hospital Kandy family, bringing with them knowledge, dedication, and a commitment to quality patient care.

A welcome ceremony and orientation programme were conducted under the guidance of the Chief Special Grade Nursing Officer and the Special Grade Nursing Officer panel. The programme was organized and facilitated by the Health Promotion Unit, providing an introduction to the hospital's services, professional standards, and work environment.

We warmly welcome these Nursing Officers and wish them success in their nursing careers as they contribute to delivering compassionate, safe, and high-quality healthcare to the people of Sri Lanka.

A significant milestone in enhancing cancer care services has been achieved with the relocation of the Oncology Clinic to the newly established, well-facilitated Sethpiyasa Building – Ground Floor.

This initiative was undertaken with the vision of centralizing all cancer care services under one roof, ensuring greater convenience, accessibility, and comfort for patients and their families. Oncology medical wards, the Oncology Clinic, and the Linear Accelerator Radiotherapy Unit are now functioning within the new Sethpiyasa Building, creating a more integrated and patient-centered healthcare environment.

Our priority remains delivering safe, convenient, comprehensive, and compassionate care to every patient suffering from cancer. This new facility marks another important step forward in strengthening oncology services and improving the overall patient experience.

Together, we continue our commitment towards better cancer care and a healthier future for our community.

Empowering Nurses – Quality Management and Patient Safety

An in-service training program for Nursing Officers on Quality Management, Patient Safety, and Accreditation was successfully conducted at National Hospital Kandy.

The program was conducted over three days, from 14th May 2026 to 16th May 2026. A total of 100 Nursing Officers participated in the program, representing National Hospital Kandy and hospitals under the Regional Directorate of Health Services in the Central Province.

The main objective of this program was to update knowledge, enhance skills, and develop positive attitudes among nurses toward continuous quality improvement while safeguarding standards in patient care and safety.

The program was organized by the Ministry of Health and conducted by the Quality Management Unit in collaboration with the Health Promotion Unit of National Hospital Kandy.
