77 Years of Service, Sacrifice and Unwavering Commitment to the Nation

On the proud occasion of the 77th Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Army, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and profound respect to the Commander of the Army, all serving officers and other ranks, and the distinguished veterans who have served our motherland with honour, courage and unwavering dedication.

It remains one of the greatest privileges of my life to have commanded this proud institution as its 23rd Commander, and subsequently served as the country’s Chief of Defence Staff. These responsibilities have given me a profound appreciation of the Army’s traditions, its extraordinary resilience, and the sacrifices made by generations of soldiers in the service of our nation.

Throughout its history, the Sri Lanka Army has stood as a strong and faithful guardian of our motherland and its people. In times of conflict, natural disasters, national emergencies and other moments of adversity, our soldiers have stood firm, often at immense personal cost, to protect our nation and its people. Their courage, professionalism and selfless service remain a lasting part of our national legacy.

The true strength of an Army lies not merely in its capabilities, but in the trust it earns, the people it protects, and the responsibility it carries towards the nation.

As we mark this significant milestone, I pay tribute to all who have served, with special remembrance of our fallen heroes who made the supreme sacrifice, and sincere respect for our wounded war veterans whose courage and resilience continue to inspire us.

I am confident that the present and future generations of the Sri Lanka Army will uphold these proud traditions, strengthen their professionalism, and remain ever ready to defend our sovereignty, protect our people, and serve the nation with honour, discipline and integrity.

May the Sri Lanka Army continue to stand tall as a symbol of courage, unity, loyalty and unwavering service to our motherland.

Former Army Commander General Shavendra Silva has questioned why former LTTE cadres were rehabilitated and allowed to reintegrate into society while Sri Lankan military officers who served on the front lines face international sanctions.
Speaking in a wide-ranging interview with India-based Impact Stories, Silva referred to sanctions imposed on him by the United States and United Kingdom and maintained that he had not committed war crimes during the final stages of Sri Lanka’s civil war.

“The terrorists who fought the war, who accepted they were terrorists, were rehabilitated. They go all over,” Silva said.

He said around 12,000 former LTTE members were rehabilitated after surrendering their weapons at the end of the conflict.

“They have been given a pardon, whereas the professional military officers who were in the front are being sanctioned all over,” he said.

Today marks the 4th death anniversary of my beloved father.

I remain eternally grateful to my darling Amma and Thaththa for bringing me into this world and giving me the privilege of being born in this beautiful motherland. My Thaththa was not only the one who guided me whenever I needed direction, but also the person who quietly taught me the values, discipline, principles and best practices of life that have shaped who I am today.

Though four years have passed since he left us, his teachings, his values and his presence remain deeply rooted in my heart. Much of what I know and cherish today was first taught to me by him.

Today, I offer Dane to the Maha Sangha Rathnaya and respectfully invoke blessings for my beloved father, with the sincere hope that the merits of this good deed may bring him peace and supreme bliss.

May my darling Thaththa attain the Supreme Bliss of Nibbana.
