Mission
In 1961, President John F.

Visit Peace Corps Sri Lanka page and experience how we are getting ready to welcome Volunteers to work in the beautiful pearl of the Indian Ocean! Kennedy established the Peace Corps to promote world peace and friendship. The Peace Corps' mission has three simple goals:
1. Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
2. Helping promote a better unde

rstanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
3. Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans. Description
The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship. Since that time, 240,000+ Peace Corps Volunteers have served in 144 host countries to work on issues ranging from HIV/AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation. Today's Peace Corps is more vital than ever, and Volunteers work in the areas of agriculture, community economic development, education, environment, health, and youth in development. Peace Corps Volunteers continue to help countless individuals who want to build a better life for themselves, their children, and their communities. PCV Monika co-teaching with counterpart Buddike

Two teachers,
standing side by side,
sharing one small classroom
and one big dream.

Each lesson taught
is passed like a light,
so when one leaves,
the other still shines.

This is how learning stays —
heart to heart,
hand to hand.

PCVs are never really alone. Peace Corps Program Managers visit them, check in with them, guide them, and appreciate their work and efforts. They cheer them on and provide steady support throughout their service.

This kind of support makes a huge difference and reminds every Volunteer that there’s a team standing behind them … one Peace Corps Family! ⭐️❤️

In a remote school,
two teachers share the same hope.
Every word taught together
roots itself deeper.

And when the PCV’s journey concludes,
the lessons stay alive —
because two hearts
loved them into being.

PCV Amanda shared a surprisingly meaningful part of Peace Corps life: laundry. 🧺✨

It’s one of those things you don’t expect to learn from, but it ends up teaching a lot. Handwashing helps you understand the daily rhythm of the community. You start to see why people plan washing around weather, water, and time. And you realize how much effort goes into something you never thought twice about back home.

You also learn your host family’s routines—when they wash, how they dry clothes, how everyone shares space. You see how carefully people take care of their clothes, how they make things last, and how they avoid wasting water. It teaches patience, humility, and an appreciation for a slower, more intentional way of living.

And the best part? It becomes a small bonding moment. Someone shows you how to scrub a collar just right, or how to hang uniforms so they dry faster in the sun. Those tiny lessons are cultural learning in disguise. You’re not just doing laundry—you’re learning how people live, work, and manage everyday life.

That’s how something as simple as washing clothes becomes part of cross‑cultural understanding. 💧🌿

PCV Athena co-teaching with counterpart teacher Saseela

Two teachers,
one lesson,
one small room.

Sharing words,
sharing ways,
helping each other bloom.

Day by day
skills stay strong,
passed hand to hand,
passed on and on.

And long after
the PCV returns home,
their teaching lives on —
because it grew from two.

PCV Ariana is getting extra support in learning Sinhala, with Anushika Teacher as her tutor. Last week’s lesson was all about making roti!

While they studied, they cooked roti together along with lunu miris—a spicy mix of red chili, green chili, onions, and salt.

Ariana loves learning Sinhala, and she loves the cooking part of her lessons too. Trying out different local foods has become a fun way for her to learn the language, understand the culture, and feel even more connected to her community. ❤️🌶️Serving as a Volunteer in Sri Lanka is spicy, delicious, and educational!

PCV Erin and her counterpart, Sumudu, kicked off a lesson on the topic “Eating Food.” 🍎🍛They started by going through a list of food‑related English words. Students said each word out loud, and the teachers helped them with pronunciation along the way.

What a wonderfully simple, fun, and interactive way for students to learn new vocabulary while building confidence in speaking. 📚✨Great job Erin and Sumudu Teacher!!!

One of the best parts of teaching is seeing students grow in confidence. 📚✨

PCV Dane was surprised and touched when a student wrote an essay titled “The Teacher I Like Most.”

Moments like this highlight the impact of co‑teaching and the strong partnerships between Peace Corps Volunteers and their Sri Lankan counterparts. Peace Corps Sri Lanka Volunteers are loved and appreciated for the heart they bring to their work. 💪❤️
