Green Energy Champion

Green Energy Champion The Green Energy Champion project is on a mission to promote energy-efficiency and conscious energy consumption.

Initiated in 2016 and now in its fourth phase, it aims to raise public awareness and foster green-energy visionaries in Sri Lanka. On behalf of the Federal Foreign Office, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the Sri Lankan Ministry of Power, State Ministry of Solar, Wind and Hydro Power Generation Projects Development in improving energy efficiency in Sri La

nka. An integral part of the project is the Green Energy Accelerator 2021 implemented by Hatch Works in cooperation with Good Life X, an expedition to identify businesses actively trying to implement energy-efficient projects, and provide them with resources for training and to drive nascent product development and growth. Green Energy Accelerator 2021 gives participants the opportunity to tap into global markets, while raising their brand visibility locally and internationally. This project is also supported by the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce, as well as the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority.

We are excited to share this inspiring and insightful story from Kuliyapitiya, Sri Lanka.

The Kuliyapitiya Success Story is proof that Sri Lanka’s sustainable energy solutions can be achieved through awareness and collective effort!

It all started with a small spark in 2015 when the Kuliyapitiya Pradeshiya Sabha (Green Energy Champion 2019, winner), decided to build a system that would convert biodegradable waste into biogas.
It turned out to be the perfect waste management solution for the town that was riddled with the issue of disposing the organic waste collected every day.

Today, Kuliyapitiya proudly presents a sustainable community with fully functional organic waste disposal systems and community biodigester units that process tonnes of organic waste to produce biogas and liquid fertiliser for the benefit of the entire community!

The Kuliyapitya Pradeshiya Sabha has even built a park with a biogas unit in order to shift people's attitudes and mindsets around "waste" and raise awareness about its wonderful benefits. A number of schools continue to visit this park to learn the importance of waste management and energy sustainability.

We hope that this story inspires many others to create green sustainable changes that will benefit communities and our planet.
