Today, our team successfully removed a wire snare from a young male elephant. This sub-adult male was in distress but fortunately did not sustain any serious injuries from the snare. We want to express our deep gratitude to Dilipa Safari - Udawalawa for alerting us to the presence of this snared elephant early in the morning. His keen observation and swift action allowed us to respond quickly and safeguard the life of this innocent giant, preventing further harm.

අද අපේ කණ්ඩායමට තරුණ අලියෙකුගේ පාදයේ පැටලී තිබූ කම්බි මද්දක් සාර්තකව ඉවත් කිරීමට හැකි වුනා. අලියාගේ කකුලට වැඩි හානියක් නෑ. මේ අලියා පිලිබඳ උදෙන්ම අපට තොරතුරු කියපු උඩවලවේ දිලීප සෆාරි වෙත අපගේ ස්තුතිය. ඔවුන්ගේ තීක්ශන ඇස නිසා මේ සද්දන්තයාගේ කකුලට වැඩි හානියක් වීමට කලින් අපට මේ සතාව බේරාගන්න හැකි උනා.

Megha's journey is a poignant reminder of the resilience of nature and the compassion of those who dedicate their lives to wildlife conservation. In September 2023, a young elephant was found in the Puliyankulama area, severely injured by a jaw bomb—a cruel and lethal method used to harm animals. When wildlife officers discovered the baby elephant, he had been in pain for a day, its mouth severely injured, and his mandible broken.
Recognizing the critical need for immediate care, the officers transported the little elephant to the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home. There, he underwent a series of surgeries to repair the damage caused by the jaw bomb. Due to the severity of his injuries, he initially could not chew and had to be fed liquid food via a feeding tube inserted through his neck. This gruelling process required dedicated staff to care for him around the clock, providing sustenance every three hours without much rest.
Over time, Megha’s condition improved. As the wounds in his mouth healed, he transitioned from the feeding tube to foraging and eating alongside his peers. Now, he enjoys a life of freedom and companionship with other elephants, exploring the vast landscape and learning to navigate his world like any other young elephant.
This story underscores the vital importance of swift action and collective effort in wildlife rescue. Special thanks are due to the Kilinochchi Wildlife Officers for their quick response and to the compassionate and tireless staff at the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home. Their unwavering commitment ensured that Megha avoided the tragic fate faced by many elephants affected by jaw bombs. Thanks to their efforts, this young elephant has a second chance at life and can thrive in a safe environment. Megha’s recovery is a testament to the power of empathy, dedication, and the fight against wildlife cruelty.

මේඝගේ කතාව ස්වභාවධර්මයේ ඔරොත්තු දීමේ හැකියාව සහ වනජීවී සංරක්ෂණය සඳහා තම ජීවිතය කැප කරන අයගේ අනුකම්පාව පිළිබඳ සංවේදී මතක් කිරීමකි.
2023 සැප්තැම්බර් මාසයේදී පුලියන්කුලම ප්‍රදේශයෙන් හක්කපටස් කෑම නිසා දැඩි ලෙස කටට තුවාලවූ අලි පැටියෙක් සොයාගන්නවා, වනජීවී නිලධාරීන් අලි පැටවා සොයා ගන්නා විට මේ පැටියාගෙ යටි හනුවේ අස්ථි කැඩිලා දැඩි වේදනාවක් විදිමින් සිටියෙ.
වහාම ක්‍රියාත්මක වූ කිලිනොච්චිය වනජීවී නිලධාරීන් පැටියව උඩවලව ඇත් අතුරු සෙවනට යොමු කරනව. එහිදී අලි පැටියගෙ හනුවේ අස්ථි නැවත සැකසීම සදහා ශල්‍යකර්ම කිහිපයක්ම කරන්න සිදුවෙනව.
මෙයාගෙ තුවාලවල බරපතලකම නිසාත්, ආහාර හපන්නට නොහැකි නිසාත් බෙල්ල හරහා ඇතුළු කරන ලද බටයක් හරහා තමයි කටේ තුවාල හොදවෙනකන් ආහාර ලබාදෙන්න සිදුවෙන්නෙ.. ශල්‍යකර්ම වලින් අනතුරුව මෙයාව රැකබලාගැනීම තමයි බරපතලම කාර්ය වෙන්නෙ, මොකද මෙයාට රෑ දවල් දෙකේම පැය තුනෙන් තුනට බටය හරහා ආහාර ලබාදෙන්න වෙනව.
කාලයත් එක්ක මේඝගේ තත්වය යහපත් අතට හැරෙනව, කටේ තුවාල සම්පූර්ණයෙන් හොද වූ පසු මේඝව එයා වගේම අසරණ වෙලා ඇත් අතුරු සෙවනට ආපු අනිත් අලි පැටවුන් එක්ක කෑම හොයාගෙන කන්න යොමුකරනව, දැන් මේඝ එයාගෙ යාළුවන් එක්ක උඩවලව ජාතික උද්‍යානයේ නිදහසේ කාලය ගතකරනව.
කිලිනොච්චිය වනජීවී නිලධාරීන්ගේ කඩිනම් ක්‍රියාත්මකවීමත් ඇත් අතුරු සෙවන් කාර්යමණ්ඩලයේ දැඩි කැපවීමත් නිසා හක්කපටස් කන බොහෝ අලි පැටවුන්ට අත්වන ඉරණමෙන් මෙයාව ගලවගන්න ඔවුන්ට හැකිවෙනවා..

We had a very special guest at our wildlife hospital recently – a majestic mountain hawk-eagle! Unfortunately, the eagle had an accident while hunting a porcupine and got injured by its sharp quills, causing severe chest injuries.
Our committed veterinary team took X-rays to assess the extent of the damage before performing surgery to remove the quills. After a month of rest and rehabilitation, the eagle was finally able to fly again! We transferred the eagle to a large rehabilitation cage where it could practice flying, and last week, we released it back into its natural habitat near the Sinharaja rainforest. Thanks to the timely response of the wildlife officials in the Sinharaja Range and the excellent care provided by our team, this beautiful bird is now back in the wild, soaring through the skies once more!

පසුගිය දවසක අපේ වනජීවී රෝහලට විශේෂ අමුත්තෙක් ඇතුලත් කලා. ඒ තමයි ටිකක් දුර්ලභ කුරුල්ලෙක් වන කඳුකර කොන්ඩ-රාජාලියෙක්. අවාසනාවකට මෙයා ටිකක් අසාමාන්‍ය ගොදුරක් දඩයම් කිරීමට ගිහින් තිබුනා. ඒ ඉත්තෑවෙක්ව.. මෙයාගෙ පපු ප්‍රදේශයට ඉත්තෑ කූරු ඇනිල දරුණු තුවාල සිද්ධවෙලා.. මෙයාව ගේනකොට වේදනාව නිසා පියාඹන්න පුලුවන්කමක් තිබුනෙ නෑ. ඒවගේම හුස්මගත්තෙත් බොහොම අමාරුවෙන්.
ඉක්මනින්ම අපේ පශු වෛද්‍ය කණ්ඩායම මෙයාගෙ x-කිරණ චායාරූප අරගෙන සිදුවෙලා තියන හානිය හොයාගෙන සාර්තක සැත්කමක් කලා. මෙයාට මාසයක් පමන කාලයක් රෝහලේ ප්‍රථිකාර කලාට පස්සෙ විශාල කූඩුවකට දාල ආයිත් පියාඹන්න පුහුණු කලා. ඉතින් පසුගිය සතියෙ මෙයාව නැවත එයාගෙ සුපුරුදු වාසස්තානයට නිදහස් කරන්න අපේ කණ්ඩායමට හැකි වුනා. සිංහරාජ අඩවියේ වනජීවී නිලධාරීන් ඉක්මනින්ම ක්‍රියාත්මකවෙලා මේ වටිනා කුරුල්ලාව ඉක්මනින් උඩවලව ඇත් අතුරු සෙවනට රැගෙන ආ නිසා හා අපේ කණ්ඩායමේ රැකවර්ණය නිසා මේ අලංකාර කුරුල්ලාට නැවත නිදහසේ පියාඹන්නට වාසනාව ලැබිලා..

We have some heart-breaking news regarding a four-year-old baby elephant named Saroja. Saroja was recently discovered without her mother in the Sarvodaya Tank area in Lunugamwehera National Park. Sadly, her mother had passed away due to a severe parasitic infection. As Saroja is not yet old enough to live alone, he has been referred to us, the Elephant Transit Home, for care.

Saroja is the second baby elephant admitted to us this year, and we are committed to providing her with the best possible care. Despite no visible physical injuries, Saroja has been affected by the parasite infection and requires continuous treatment and maintenance of her nutritional status. We are working tirelessly to ensure that Saroja receives the appropriate care she needs.

We understand the importance of animal welfare and the significance of preserving their natural habitat. Your support in helping us care for Saroja is greatly appreciated. With your help, we can continue to provide care for these wonderful animals and ensure their survival for generations to come.

මෙම වසරේ උඩවලව ඇත් අතුරු සෙවනට පැමිණි දෙවන අසරණ අලි පැටවා මේ. වයස අවුරුදු හතරක් පමන වන මේ අලි පැටවා හමුවෙන්නෙ ලුණුගම්වෙහෙර ජාතික උද්‍යානයේ සර්වෝදය වැව කියන ප්‍රදේශයෙන්. ඒ නිසා මේ අලි පැටවාට අපි සරෝජා කියන නම තබන්න තීරනය කරා. මේ අලි පැටවාගේ අම්මා දරුනු පර්පෝශිත ආසාදනයක් නිසා මියගිහිල්ලා. මෙයා තවමත් තනිව ජීවත්වීමට තරම් වයසක නොවෙන නිසා ඌව කලාපයේ වනජීවී සෞඛ්‍ය කලමනාකරණ ඒකකයේ නිලධාරීන් විසින් මෙම අලි පැටවා පසුගිය දින අප වෙත යොමුකලා. භාහිරින් කිසිදු ආබාදයක් නොපෙනුනත් පරපෝශිත ආසාදනය මෙම පැටවාටද වැළඳීම නිසා නොකඩවා ප්‍රථිකාර කිරීම හා පෝෂණ තත්වය පවත්වාගෙන යන්න සිදුවෙනවා.

This is the first orphaned baby elephant to arrive at the Elephant Transit Home (ETH) this year, 2024. He is a male juvenile with a short trunk caused by previous damage from a snare injury.

A few days ago, he fell into a well. The officials from our Galkotukanda Wildlife Office made a great effort to rescue him from the well and reunite him with his mother. Unfortunately, the muscles in his hind legs were severely damaged due to the fall.

The officials from our Galkotukanda office were on alert about the herd, and two days later, they noticed that the baby elephant was recumbent and unable to move with the herd. Then, they informed our veterinary team about further treatments for the calf. However, it wasn't easy to reach the baby elephant because his mother and other adult females in the herd were protecting him. Eventually, we had to give sedatives to his mother to give the necessary treatments to him. After the initial treatment, he showed some signs of improvement. However, he could not walk properly. So, considering the possible future risks to his life, it was decided to bring him to the Elephant Transit Home.

We named him "Pangira" because he was found in Pagirigala near Wetahirakanda Elephant Corridor. Thanks to the unwavering dedication of our veterinarians and staff, the elephant calf we brought to the ETH has made significant strides in his recovery. Despite experiencing a few instances of recumbency, he is now well on his way to a full and healthy recovery. Our team hopes to release him back to his habitat once he recovers.

2024 වසරේ ඇත් අතුරු සෙවනට ලැබුනු පලමුවෙනි අලි පැටියා මේ. වසර හතරක් පමන වයසැති මේ පිරිමි අලි පැටියාගේ හොඩවැල මීට පෙර මන්දකට හසුවිම හේතුවෙන් කැඩිලා කොටවෙලා තිබුනෙ.

මේ අලි පැටියා මීට දින කිහිපයකට පෙර වගා ලිදකට වැටී සිටියදී අපේ ගල්කොටුකන්ද වනජීවී කාර්‍යාලයේ නිලධාරීන් විසින් ඉන් බේරාගෙන රංචුවට නැවත භාරදීලා තියනව. නමුත් අවාසනාවකට මේ අලි පැටියගෙ පසුපස ගත්‍රාවල මාංශ පේශිවලට දැඩි හානි සිදුවෙලා. මේ හේතුවෙන් මෙයාට රංචුව සමග ගමන්කරන්න බැරුව බිම ඇදවැටිලා. රංචුව ගැන හොඳ අවධානයෙන් සිටි නිසා ගල්කොටුකන්ද වනජීවී නිලධාරීන්ට මේ පැටවා නැවත සොයාගැනීමට හැකිවුනා. ඊට පසුව නිලධාරීන් විසින් මේ පිළිබද ඇත් අතුරු සෙවන දැනුවත් කලා. ඒ අනුව අපගේ පශු වෛද්‍ය කණ්ඩායම අදාල ස්ථානයට ගියත් මව් ඇතින්න හා රංචුවේ අනිත් වැඩිහිටි සතුන් මෙම පැටියාට ලංවෙන්න ඉඩ දුන්නෙ නෑ. මේ නිසා අලි පැටවාට ප්‍රථිකාර කරන්න මවු ඇතින්නව නිර්වින්දනය කරන්න සිද්ධවුණා. පසුව මූලික ප්‍රථිකාර ලබාදුන්නත් අලි පැටියාට හරි ආකාරයෙන් ඇවිදගැනීමට නොහැකි වූ නිසා අලි පැටියාව ඇත් අතුරු සෙවනට ගේන්න තීරනය කලා.

මේ අලිපැටියාව හමුවුනේ වැටහිරකන්ද අලි මංකඩ ආසන්නයේ පිහිටි පැඟිරිගල ප්‍රදේශයෙන් ඒ නිසා මෙයාව හදුනාගන්න පහසුවෙන්න “පැඟිරා” කියන නම දැම්මා. දැන් මේ අලි පැටවා අපගේ කැපවූ පශු වෛද්‍යවරුන්ගේ හා කාර්යමණ්ඩලයේ රැකවරනය යතතේ සුවය ලබමින් සිටින අතර සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම සුවය ලැබූ පසු නුදුරු අනාගතයේදී නැවත ඔහුගේ උපන් බිම වෙත නිදහස් කිරීමට බලාපොරොත්තුවෙනවා.

The Elephant Transit Home is a highly-regarded facility that provides exceptional care to young orphaned elephants while also playing a vital role in managing wildlife health in the Southern Wildlife Region of the country. Recently, our team of skilled wildlife rescuers participated in a unique rescue operation to save a sub-adult sloth bear that was ensnared in a poacher's trap in the Thammennawa area, situated along the southern border of the Lunugamwehera National Park. Despite the challenging task of reaching the location of the trapped animal, which was inaccessible by road, our team managed to get to the site by navigating through the Thammennawa reservoir using canoes to transport the necessary equipment and cages to contain the animal. With the invaluable assistance of the local community, who were supportive throughout the rescue process, we freed the bear from the trap and safely released it back into its natural habitat.

The Elephant Transit Home is a government institution managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Sri Lanka. It was established in 1995 based on the concept of Dr Nandana Athapattu, a renowned wildlife veterinarian who worked in the department at the time. The primary objective of this institution is to rehabilitate and rewild orphaned baby elephants who have lost their mother's care due to various causes, both human and natural. The institute's rehabilitation program began with Komali, a baby elephant who had lost her mother's love. Since 1995, the program has successfully rehabilitated 168 baby elephants and released them back into the wild. The Udawala Elephant Transit Home is the world's largest and leading Asian elephant rewilding program.
