A revolutionary change in the freshwater shrimp industry: A new technological program begins under a presidential allocation of Rs. 25 million!
The National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) has initiated a special project to transform the freshwater shrimp industry in Sri Lanka into a high-yielding business sector through modern technology. Under the allocation of Rs. 25 million allocated by His Excellency the President in the 2025 budget, this new technological program has been implemented by changing traditional methods and focusing on the main reservoirs of the island.
✅ Instead of releasing the shrimp post-larvae directly into the reservoirs, they are pre-grown for a month through the "cage system" and released, so that while 300-400 larvae were previously required to obtain one kilo of shrimp, now it can be reduced to 100 grown shrimp fry.
✅ This project has been successfully implemented in Giritale Lake, two tanks in Anuradhapura District and two tanks in the Northern Province, and steps have been taken to establish 25 research-level cages in the main reservoirs.
✅ Entrepreneurs who purchase freshwater shrimp have come forward to provide shrimp larvae and food, and the Uva and Southern Provincial Councils are also providing the necessary support to expand this project in their provinces.
