A Call for Accountability: Exposing the Hypocrisy of Jerolinmek Matthew Piah and Defending the Voice of the People

In a nation where the echoes of unfulfilled promises still reverberate through our streets, markets, and villages, the courage to speak truth to power is not "rubbish"—it is the lifeblood of democracy. Mr. Alexander B. Cummings, a steadfast advocate for the Liberian people, has once again risen to articulate the harsh realities of our governance crisis under the Unity Party administration. He has laid bare the failures: rampant corruption, economic stagnation, crumbling infrastructure, and a healthcare system that leaves our citizens—especially the most vulnerable—suffering in silence. These are not partisan barbs; they are facts etched into the daily struggles of every hardworking Liberian family. For daring to voice these truths, Mr. Cummings faces baseless attacks from those whose loyalty lies not with the people, but with the perks of political patronage.
Enter Jerolinmek Matthew Piah, the current Minister of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism—a man whose "professional life" is marred not by a "visual cycle," but by a vicious, predictable pattern of opportunism that undermines his every utterance. Piah's recent dismissal of Mr. Cummings as "missing in action" and his portrayal of legitimate criticism as mere electioneering is nothing short of hypocrisy. This is the same Piah who, during the George Weah administration, fled to the comforts of the United States, where he spent years criticizing the very government he now defends with such fervor. From the safety of Worcester, Massachusetts, and later Bensalem, Pennsylvania, Piah endorsed protests against Weah, condemned his policies as revolutionary failures, and aligned himself with every anti-CDC narrative—all while pursuing a Master's in Public Policy at Harvard's Kennedy School in 2019. What tangible contributions did he make to Liberia during those six years of exile? None that uplifted our people—only rhetoric from afar that sowed discord without building solutions.
This is Piah's playbook, etched in the annals of our political history: When his patron, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, left office in January 2018 after serving as Press Secretary from 2012 to 2018, he vanished to America. He accomplished little beyond self-advancement, hurling barbs at the incoming Weah regime from across the Atlantic. Then, as swiftly as the tides turned with President Joseph Boakai's 2023 victory, Piah jetted back to Monrovia—not as a reformer, but to reclaim a plum patronage post as Information Minister in January 2024. Today, he lectures Mr. Cummings on "motivation" and governance, even as his own record reeks of selective amnesia and verbal recklessness. Under Boakai, Piah has dismissed dissent as "empty threats," ordered the seizure of journalists' phones in violation of press freedoms, and even faced accusations of assaulting a reporter in Nimba County. Where is the good governance he now champions? Buried under a mountain of unkept promises and elite self-interest.
Liberians deserve better than this carousel of convenience. Mr. Cummings stands as a beacon of integrity—a private-sector leader who built enterprises that employed thousands, without ever chasing the siren song of state largesse. His critiques are not the "rubbish" Piah peddles; they are a clarion call for the accountability our constitution demands. We, the people, are still suffering: Youth unemployment soars above 50%, inflation devours wages, and basic services remain a luxury for the few. Piah's attacks only amplify the desperation of a government more focused on silencing voices than serving citizens.
It is time to reject this vicious cycle. Demand transparency from Minister Piah: Publish the details of his U.S. sojourns and the "accomplishments" that justified his return to power. Rally behind Mr. Cummings and all who dare to hold the mirror to our leaders. Liberia's future is not in the hands of expatriate critics turned patronage princes—it is in the united resolve of a people ready to govern for all, not the few.
