The March for Hope: Liberia’s Fight for Its Youth
Everyone saw what happened on August 7th. The crowd was massive, the chants were loud, and for the first time in a long time, it felt like the entire country was standing up together. The “Say No to Drugs” march wasn’t just a protest. It was a cry for help, a moment when Liberia decided it could no longer look away, the National Safety Partnership of Liberia and other organizations as well as individuals took a bold stand. When the President declared a Public Health Emergency afterward, it felt like the nation was finally ready to confront this crisis head-on. 🚫💉
There’s real action happening on the ground too. The LDEA has been pushing hard, carrying out raids and drug busts to slow the flow of Kush and other substances tearing through our communities. Their work is dangerous and exhausting, but they keep showing up because they know what’s at stake. 👮🏾♂️👊🏾
Still, enforcement can only take us so far.
If you want to understand the real impact, go to Sorya Beach community in Thinkers Village. There, the drug crisis stops being a headline and becomes a human story. In the middle of that beach is an “island” separated by a lagoon, a place where drug use has taken hold. Young Liberians, people with dreams, families, and futures walk through murky chest-deep water or pay to cross on shaky wooden platforms just to get there. 🌊💔
That lagoon has become a painful symbol of the distance between our youth and the future they deserve. Every time someone crosses it, it feels like they’re slipping further away from the people who love them.
The LDEA is fighting to stop the supply. The marchers helped break the silence. But now, responsibility falls on all of us. Families, communities, leaders, and neighbors, we’re the ones who must help build the path back. Through rehabilitation, opportunities, support, and love.
The spirit of August 7th shouldn’t fade. Liberia has already shown it can stand up. Now we need to keep standing for every life that’s still worth fighting for.
