Peace, Rain, Prosperity! The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that insp

iration grew an agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship. Since that time, 200,000+ Peace Corps Volunteers have served in 139 host countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation. Today's Peace Corps is more vital than ever, working in emerging and essential areas such as information technology and business development, and contributing to the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Peace Corps Volunteers continue to help countless individuals who want to build a better life for themselves, their children, and their communities. Our favorite Sesotho words and phrases. Volunteers use language to connect with their friends, family and colleagues throughout their service.

Language training is a core requirement for successful integration and service delivery, since many students and community members rely on the language for daily communication.

Before becoming Volunteers, Trainees are taught in small groups by native-speaking local facilitators who also share insights into Basotho traditions and village life.

A few weeks ago, three Peace Corps Volunteers supported a GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) camp in Qacha’s Nek District. 🌍✨
Over the course of two days, participants engaged in sessions designed to build confidence, strengthen leadership skills, and encourage positive decision-making. The first day focused on empowering high school girls through conversations on self-confidence, leadership, and setting healthy boundaries.
On the second day, both boys and girls came together to explore goal setting, effective communication, and strategies for making healthy choices—highlighting the importance of avoiding drugs and alcohol and supporting one another in their futures.
A big thank you to Volunteers Isabel, Jackson, and Momo for helping facilitate these impactful sessions and supporting youth as they grow into confident leaders in their communities. 💪🏽🌱

Volunteer Rachel and her school have started working on their building maintenance project! They are working to repair two aging classroom buildings and create a safer, more supportive environment for students.

Peace Corps Partnership Program (PCPP) grant is helping to strengthen long-term technical building maintenance skills within the community.

The school and community identified the project needs through active participation from the school board, parents, and teachers. Together, they designed, managed and are currently implementing their grant. Community members are contributing their support in-kind through labor, materials, food, and transportation.

The team is excited about the maintenance of educational murals and a reception playground to support learning in a fun and child-friendly way. This month they have started repairing a chimney that leaks smoke into classrooms, resealing and painting the roofs, doing demolition work on the crumbling upper grade walkway, replacing the old classroom doors and locks, and gathering the remaining materials! The school where Volunteer Dan teaches is gigantic, with 1650+ learners in grades 1-7. The school identified technology as the top want and Dan is supporting the initiative!

The school is partnering with Dan to install electricity in all of the classrooms. Each room will now be fitted with outlets and lights, allowing students in the back of the classroom to see the board on overcast days. The long term goal is that electricity will pave the way for future installations of projectors.

Volunteer Dan, his supervisor and counterpart helped acquire a printer and four laptops through the Peace Corps Partnership Program. Dan is helping 23 teachers meet their need to acquire digital literacy skills through a series of custom-made technology trainings over several months. This knowledge will allow them to migrate recordkeeping into a digital format. Mark sheets and registers of 250+ students are currently written, tabulated, and organized by hand. Using a tailor-made Google Sheets template, the teachers can complete these tasks in a fraction of the time, with improved organization and data visualization to monitor the progress of their classes.

Teachers in the upper grades have expressed difficulty accurately representing complex diagrams (i.e. of the human body) on a chalkboard. Quizzes and tests must all be written by hand, then transcribed by the students. A printer will allow teachers to efficiently share information with students, and it will improve miscellaneous administrative processes within the schools upper administration.

The project team is strengthening the capacity of educators and learners to increase general literacy, numeracy and life skills through the use of technology.

Peace Corps Volunteer Teryn is partnering with the community to create a warm and inviting place for learners and teachers at the school. Together they are serving 200 learners and 6 teachers at a rural primary school by training teachers and learners on how to set up and run a library and technology lab.
Here is an update on the progress of The Mountaintop Library and Technology Lab at their school made possible by the Peace Corps Partnership Grant.
