The European Commission has launched an initiative that asks a different question: what would social media look like if it were built around privacy, inclusion, accessibility, and user wellbeing from the start?

The proposal is particularly interesting because it shifts the conversation from reacting to problems to designing better digital spaces, with young people themselves involved in the process.

Is this a meaningful step toward a healthier online ecosystem, or is it too small to compete with today's platform giants?

We explored the initiative, its goals, the debates around digital rights and child safety, and why it may signal a broader shift in Europe's digital strategy.

The course has been set. Through its Digital Decade Initiative, Europe is pursuing an ambitious goal: digital sovereignty.
From strengthening its technological capabilities to reducing strategic dependencies, the EU is working to shape its digital future on its own terms. But the journey towards digital sovereignty is about more than infrastructure, cloud services, or where technology is built.
At its core, digital sovereignty is about power - who makes the decisions, who sets the rules, and who remains in control.
As Europe moves forward, the question is not simply whether it can achieve digital sovereignty, but what kind of digital sovereignty it chooses to build.
European Pirates offer a different perspective: true digital sovereignty begins with people's control.

"Prove that you are human."

For years, reCAPTCHA was just a harmless little internet ritual. Click a box. Identify a few traffic lights. Move on.

Now, Google's overhaul of reCAPTCHA is raising much bigger questions about AI-driven surveillance, privacy, device control, and the future of the open internet.

Critics warn the new system could disadvantage privacy-focused users while pushing the web deeper into corporate-controlled ecosystems.

The article explores what's changing and why it matters far beyond spam protection.

The European Pirates stand in solidarity with our observer member, the Hungarian Two-Tailed Dog Party (MKKP), following growing concerns around democratic freedoms and political pressure in Hungary.

Known for combining political satire with civic activism, the MKKP has become an important voice for free expression, transparency, and citizen participation.

At a time when democratic values and civil liberties continue to face challenges across Europe, solidarity between movements defending openness, participation, and fundamental rights remains essential.

End-to-end encryption has long been seen as essential to online privacy. But ongoing debates around Meta’s handling of encrypted communication are reopening difficult questions about digital rights, platform responsibility, and user trust.

As regulators and technology companies push for greater oversight and moderation, concerns around privacy and secure communication continue to grow.

Where should the line between safety, regulation, and privacy be drawn?

A banking app blocks screenshots to protect sensitive data.
Social media platforms often leave privacy protection to user settings.

Both increasingly rely on AI.
So why does digital safety feel fundamentally different across systems?

Can security be built into systems at the design level rather than added after harm occurs?
Can AI evolve from reacting to threats… to anticipating misuse before it happens?
And if systems can verify identity, can they also learn to understand intent?

As debates around AI governance, digital freedom, age verification, and platform accountability continue to grow, these questions are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. They are also part of the broader conversations shaping the upcoming Think Twice Conference in Brussels.
