Imagine arriving in a new country overnight.
You don't know the language.
You don't understand the procedures.
And the path to stability can feel impossible to navigate alone.

That’s where pro bono lawyers step in. ⚖️

Since 2022, the Ukraine Pro Bono Collaborative – a coalition of 5 major international law firms based in Warsaw – has been working alongside European Lawyers in Lesvos to support Ukrainian refugees. Whether it's applying for international protection, accessing child benefits, or simply opening a bank account, Polish lawyers help people make informed decisions and regain a sense of control over their lives.

💬 “Behind every case is a human story. That is what keeps me coming back: the knowledge that what we do matters,” says Aleksandra, a lawyer at A&O Shearman Poland.

💬 “I see our visitors not as clients seeking legal advice, but as neighbours or friends who suddenly found themselves in a completely unfamiliar situation. The same story that my family was living through,” adds Igor, a Ukrainian interpreter who has supported the project since its earliest days.

Together, Aleksandra and Igor show what solidarity looks like up close: not a slogan, but people who keep showing up. 🇵🇱🤝🇺🇦
Through the Ukraine Pro Bono Collaborative, more than 65 Warsaw-based lawyers across 5 firms have already helped over 13,000 people.

• zamknij drzwi i okna w domu;
• ogranicz do minimum narażenie na dym i unikaj długotrwałej aktywności fizycznej na zewnątrz, gdy dym lub zapach spalenizny są szczególnie wyraźne;
• tymczasowo wyłącz wentylację lub systemy wymiany powietrza pobierające powietrze z zewnątrz, jeśli mogą powodować przedostawanie się dymu do pomieszczeń;
• zwróć szczególną uwagę na osoby szczególnie wrażliwe, w tym niemowlęta i małe dzieci, osoby starsze, kobiety w ciąży oraz osoby z chorobami układu oddechowego lub sercowo-naczyniowego;

Poles Who Changed the World #8

Why the highest peak in Australia has such a strange-sounding name: Mount Kosciuszko?

It was Paweł Edmund Strzelecki - the most famous Polish traveler, tireless explorer, versatile researcher and humanitarian, who traveled across all continents except Antarctica!

Strzelecki was born into a landowning family in Wielkopolska. After working as an estate manager in Poland’s eastern Borderlands, he moved to London in 1831, where he studied geology, chemistry and physics.

At 38, he began his life as an explorer. He traveled through North and South America, researching geology, mineralogy, agriculture, climate and Indigenous cultures. In 1838, he crossed the Pacific, visiting Polynesia, Hawaii, Tahiti and New Zealand.

Australian Paradise

Strzelecki arrived in Sydney in 1839 and explored large parts of Australia. He discovered gold-bearing areas, the source of the Murray River and fertile lands he named Gippsland. He also climbed Australia’s highest peak and named it Mount Kosciuszko, in honor of Tadeusz Kościuszko.

His expeditions were often extremely difficult. During one journey, his group spent 26 days crossing dense wilderness with almost no food, surviving partly on raw koala meat.

Darwin’s Praise

Strzelecki returned to Europe in 1843 and published his major work on Australia and Tasmania in 1845. The book earned him a gold medal from the Royal Geographical Society and an honorary degree from Oxford. Charles Darwin praised the extraordinary scope of his research.

But Strzelecki was not only an explorer. During the Great Famine in Ireland, he worked for the British Relief Fund, distributing aid and helping thousands of people. He pioneered school meal and clothing programmes and helped poor Irish families resettle in Australia.

He refused payment for his humanitarian work and was later knighted by Queen Victoria.

Strzelecki died in London in 1873, aged 77, leaving a lasting legacy as an explorer, scientist and philanthropist.

On 15 August, Poland celebrates 🇵🇱 Polish Armed Forces Day, honouring the soldiers who serve to protect the country’s security, sovereignty and independence.

The date commemorates the Battle of Warsaw of 1920, one of the most significant victories in Polish history and a decisive moment in the Polish-Soviet War.

Today, the Polish Armed Forces are modern and professional forces dedicated to Poland’s security and working closely with its allies within NATO. Polish soldiers also contribute to international security and cooperation.

Respect and gratitude to all those who have served and continue to serve Poland.

🎒 Just two days after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, Lidia and her mother crossed the Polish border in search of safety. Today, at the Polski Czerwony Krzyż (PCK)-Świętokrzyskie in Kielce, she is the one helping others rebuild their lives from scratch.
As the Livelihoods program coordinator, Lidia supports the Ukrainian community in Poland. Drawing from her own experience of escaping war, she guides people to find jobs, open businesses, and regain their independence.
💬 “I grew alongside the project – first as the coordinator's assistant, and today as its coordinator. Together with the Polish Red Cross team, we've helped many people who had the courage to start over” says Lidia.
Lidia’s story proves that true safety means more than just finding shelter. It means regaining the power to shape one’s future and to thrive as professionals and neighbours in a shared community 🇵🇱🤝🇺🇦
When Russia attacked Ukraine, 1.73 million Ukrainian refugees received legal and financial protection in Poland. Every life restarted is proof that we are strongest when we stand together. ❤️

Poles Who Changed the World #7

What do a taxi fare counter, a ship-navigation device, submarines, a periscope, electric propulsion, aircraft and the modern science of propellers have in common?

They are all part of the extraordinary legacy of Stefan Drzewiecki (1844–1938) — a Polish engineer, inventor and pioneer of both underwater navigation and aviation.

His first patented invention, in 1867, was a device for measuring the distance travelled by horse-drawn carriages — essentially an early odometer. He later developed the dromograph, an ingenious instrument that automatically plotted a ship’s course on a map.

But Drzewiecki soon turned his attention to the world beneath the waves. In the 1870s, he designed a series of pedal-powered submarines, including one-person and four-person vessels. He was also a pioneer in the use of the periscope in submarines and developed the world's first submarine with electric battery-powered propulsion.

His innovations did not stop there. Drzewiecki worked on torpedo-launching systems, submarine design and propulsion. His mathematical research into propellers became an important foundation for understanding how propellers work in ships and aircraft.

Then he looked to the skies. ✈️

Drzewiecki studied aerodynamics, gliding and bird flight, developed theories of flight and worked on aircraft designs. His Canard aircraft incorporated a rear propeller and automatic stabilisation — ideas that were highly innovative for their time. Some of his concepts anticipated solutions later seen in aircraft developed by the Wright brothers.

Drzewiecki was also a strong advocate for aerodynamic research and helped promote the development of wind-tunnel research in Paris.
