Finnish Art in Riga 🎨🇫🇮

This year, visual artists have been among the most active representatives of Finnish culture in Latvia. Currently, Riga hosts works by two Finnish artists.

At the Latvian National Museum of Art, the exhibition "Embodied Thought" features virtual drawings created during the COVID-19 period by Jaakko Pallasvuo in collaboration with Viktors Timofejevs.

At the ISSP Gallery’s international group exhibition "Notes from a Volatile Time" in the Veldze Quarter, visitors can see photographs by Toivo Heinimäki. His series Tetris reflects on the architecture of late 20th-century Finland and its changing place in today’s urban landscape.

We are proud to support Finnish artists visiting Latvia, whether by offering accommodation in the Embassy’s guest apartment or by welcoming them to the Embassy and introducing them to our collection of Finnish modern art.

25 July 2026 marked a special milestone for the Finnish military history. It was exactly 110 years ago that the Finnish Jäger battalion was deployed for frontline battle in Smarde against the Russian Empire. The battalion had been trained in Lockstedt, Germany. They had already gained battlefield experience on Latvian soil for a couple of months alongside German soldiers.

Ambassador Anne Saloranta and Kari Saloranta hosted a reception to commemorate the joint military heritage of Finland, Latvia and Germany. Brigadier General Vesa Valtonen, the 27th Jaeger Battalion Heritage Association, the Academic Karelian Society and other guests graced the event with their presence.

The brave Finnish Jägers were honored at the site in Smarde after a fascinating tour to the historical sites around Riga and the Gulf of Riga. Through his insightful and captivating narration, General Valtonen brought to life the events of 110 years ago, placing them within the broader context of world history. Wreaths were laid at memorial sites and at the graves of fallen Jägers to honor their sacrifice and legacy.

Our heartfelt thanks to everyone present to make the events so very special! It was a particular delight to have the ensemble of the Dragoon Band of the Finnish Defence Forces perform at both events.

The Embassy of Finland in Riga continues proudly to support the Jäger heritage activities.

Last weekend, Cēsis once again became a hub for inspiring discussions and new ideas as it hosted the LAMPA Conversation Festival for the 12th time.
Several Finnish experts were among this year’s speakers, including Anneli Portman from the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, MP Ville Väyrynen, and Kai Alhanen and Janne Kareinen from the Dialogue Academy. They brought Finnish perspectives to important contemporary issues through insightful discussions at the Nordic Tent and other festival venues.
Ambassador Anne Saloranta and Kari Saloranta also actively participated in the festival, attending discussions, meeting participants, and enjoying the unique atmosphere of open dialogue that LAMPA is known for. The Folk Kitchen, a community meal hosted by the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office, brought people together to share a meal, exchange ideas, and strengthen community ties – an inspiring example of how food can foster connection and a sense of community.
We were pleased to see Finland represented once again at one of the Baltics’ most vibrant platforms for dialogue and civic engagement.

Last week’s Riga Contemporary 2026 highlighted the growing interest in contemporary art. We were delighted to see two Finnish galleries (SIC & Pitted Dates) represented at the fair, showcasing works by Timo Vaittinen, Olli Keränen, Elina Nissinen, Masi Tiitta, Victor Gogly, and Hermanni Saarinen, which attracted considerable attention from visitors.

Following the fair, ambassador Anne Saloranta was pleased to welcome Timo Vaittinen and his family to the Embassy to view the collection of contemporary Finnish artworks on display there. Such encounters foster valuable exchanges and further deepen the cultural connections between Finland and Latvia.

She expressed her appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the State Secretary and his excellent team at the Foreign Ministry for the exceptional collaboration and warmth over the past years.

🏒Passion for ice hockey is certainly one of the things that connects Latvia and Finland – even in the middle of the summer! ☀️🇱🇻🇫🇮

The Embassy had the great pleasure of meeting Latvia’s National Team goalkeeper Gustavs Grigals over coffee for an excellent discussion about the winter sport that is so closely followed in both our countries. 🥅🏒

The visit also provided an opportunity for the Embassy team to congratulate Gustavs on winning the bronze medal 🥉 in the Finnish Liiga. Congratulations! 👏

The Embassy wishes Gustavs and all Latvian players competing in the Finnish leagues a relaxing summer 🌿☀️ and every success in the upcoming season! 🇫🇮🤝🇱🇻🏒

We are already looking forward to the 2030 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, co-hosted by Helsinki and Riga! 🎉🏒🇫🇮🇱🇻

Now, in the middle of summer and the holiday season, it’s the perfect time to look back on one of our wonderful team adventures — our trip to Tukums.
Together with the charming guide Laura, we discovered the beauty and stories of Tukums, even stepping inside the magnificent Durbe Palace. The day continued with exciting and energetic team activities led by Zigis at Sveikuļi, bringing out our competitive spirit and creating plenty of laughter along the way.
What a fantastic day filled with great company, new experiences, and unforgettable memories. Definitely an adventure worth remembering! 💙
