107 years ago, one of the most significant victories of the Latvian War of Independence was won in the Battle of Cēsis. In June 1919, the North Latvian Brigade and the Estonian Army joined forces to defeat German units, defending both nations’ right to independence. This victory strengthened Latvia’s statehood and demonstrated the power of Latvian–Estonian cooperation in the fight for freedom. Today, Latvia and Estonia continue to stand shoulder to shoulder, strengthening NATO and safeguarding our shared values 🇱🇻🤝🇪🇪

Thank you to Latvia’s medical workers, who care for people’s health every day and, alongside their daily work, find the strength to support Ukraine 🇱🇻🤝🇺🇦

We express our solidarity with Ukrainian medical workers, who continue to save lives and provide assistance to those who need it most in unimaginably difficult circumstances.

21 June marks the summer solstice — saulgrieži — the longest day and shortest night of the year.

Deeply rooted in Latvian tradition, saulgrieži celebrates light, nature and togetherness at the height of summer. Flower crowns, oak wreaths, bonfires, traditional songs and gatherings until sunrise are all part of this ancient celebration.

A few days later, Latvians continue these midsummer traditions during Līgo and Jāņi. 🌿🔥

💬 “The specific nature of drone warfare in Ukraine forces us to rethink what we mean by “journalist safety”. Journalists are not merely caught in the crossfire; they are being deliberately targeted. The language of the UNESCO report must reflect the gravity of the threats, and combating impunity is particularly important in the current circumstances,” emphasised Rita Ruduša, media expert and representative of Latvia 🇱🇻

ℹ️ On 18 June, a meeting of the Bureau of the Intergovernmental Council of the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) was held in Paris, France, where participants discussed strengthening media sustainability, journalist safety and combating gender-based persecution of journalists.
