Happy Midsummer! 🌿

Midsummer is a major celebration in both 🇸🇪 Sweden and 🇱🇻 Latvia, marking one of the longest days of the year. In Sweden, Midsummer is celebrated on June 19 with over 18 hours of daylight in Stockholm, while in the north the sun doesn’t set at all.

The festivities include dancing, singing traditional songs, and wearing flower wreaths – traditions that we beautifully share with Latvia.

Warm (and early) wishes to everyone celebrating Latvian Midsummer next week – Priecīgus Līgo svētkus un saulainu Jāņu dienu!

Please note that the Embassy will be closed on the following dates: June 19, 23, and 24.

Visit of Lars Peter Fredén to Riga

Last week the Embassy had the great honour of receiving former 🇸🇪 Swedish diplomat Lars Peter Fredén, who served as Sweden's first consul in Riga from 1989 to 1991 and played a key role in the Swedish efforts in 1992-1994 to support the Baltic states in the negotiations on the Russian troop withdrawal.

Fredén was invited to hold a keynote address at the Swedish Chamber of Commerce 30 Year Anniversary but also had time for several other activities including a visit to the Swedish battalion in Forward Land Forces Latvia.

Swedish JAS 39 Gripen protecting Latvian skies 🇸🇪🇱🇻

Today two Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets flew over Riga Castle, the Freedom Monument, Lielvarde Air Base as well as Ādaži Military Base. This is a visible demonstration of the Swedish-Latvian cooperation in security and defense, as close bilateral partners as well as NATO Allies.

Sweden’s commitment to work closely with Latvia across several domains is strong. From our troop contribution to FLF Latvia and spring exercise in how to speedily reinforce this military presence to the visit of the Swedish Navy in Riga port in May and with the Swedish Air Force in the Baltic skies.

Sweden stands side by side with Latvia in the sky, on the seas and on the ground.

Youth engagement in 🇱🇻 Latvia

Last week the 🇸🇪 Swedish embassy, in cooperation with the embassies of 🇳🇴 Norway, 🇩🇰Denmark and 🇫🇮 Finland, hosted a seminar on youth engagement in civil society in Latvia.

The seminar brought together representatives from the Latvijas Jaunatnes padome (LJP) , as well as the regional organizations Laiks Jauniešiem and KIRA, to discuss opportunities and obstacles for increased engagement in Latvia. The discussion focused on concrete experiences from youth organizations, highlighting both practical challenges and successful approaches to engagement.

The seminar provided valuable first-hand perspectives and strengthened connections between the diplomatic community and youth actors across Latvia. A key takeaway was the importance of actively including youth perspectives in shaping policies and decisions that affect them.
