On June 18, the 5th meeting of the strategic dialogue between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Latvia was held in Riga. The Azerbaijani delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister, Fariz Rzayev, while the Latvian side was headed by Under-Secretary of State, Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ivars Lācis.
The sides reviewed the current state and future prospects of bilateral relations, underscoring the importance of regular contacts and mutual visits. Discussions also highlighted new opportunities for cooperation in trade, economy, education, science, and culture.
As part of the visit, Fariz Rzayev also met with Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Saeima of Latvia, Ināra Mūrniece, and Foreign Affairs Adviser to the President of Latvia, Edvīns Severs, and participated in roundtable discussions with Latvian experts on Azerbaijan’s foreign and security policy. 🇦🇿🇱🇻

On 10 June, the Embassy jointly with the publishing house “Zinātne” and the Riga Latvian Society hosted the presentation of the Azerbaijani researcher Nigar Sultanova’s book, “Latvia and Azerbaijan: History Through Life Stories,” at the premises of the Riga Latvian Society. The event opened with remarks by Riga Latvian Society Chairman, Guntis Gailītis, and Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Latvia, Elnur Sultanov. In their speeches, they emphasized the book’s role in bringing to light an untold chapter of the shared history of Azerbaijan and Latvia through the life stories of prominent Latvians who lived in Azerbaijan in the early twentieth century. They also highlighted the symbolic significance of the publication coinciding with the 120th anniversary of the Baku Latvian Society.
Nigar Sultanova delivered a comprehensive presentation on the research undertaken to bring the publication to fruition. She noted that the work reflects the longstanding historical ties between the Azerbaijani and Latvian peoples and expressed her sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to the project.
The event also featured remarks by the author of the book’s foreword, Ambassador Vilayat Guliyev, Chairwoman of the Board of the publishing house “Zinātne”, Ingrīda Segliņa, and former Director of the Academic Library of the University of Latvia, Venta Kocere. The speakers underlined the importance of the new publication and its contribution to preserving shared historical memory.
On behalf of the Ministry of Culture of Latvia, Parliamentary Secretary, Ivars Āboliņš, presented Nigar Sultanova with a Certificate of Recognition in appreciation of her outstanding contribution to strengthening cultural relations between Latvia and Azerbaijan.
The event included a performance by musician Leyla Aliyeva, who sang the Latvian song “Like Snow on the Mountain-Top,” written by Latvian writer and poet Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš during the years he lived in Azerbaijan, as well as the Azerbaijani folk song “Golden Bride”, accompanied by piano and guitar. In addition, J. Jaunsudrabiņš’s short story “A Turkish Prisoner” was read to the audience.
