Happy World Ocean Day! 🌊 🐳 🏖️

Did you know there are more than 21,000 Marine Protected Areas around the world? Often these are subject to specific restrictions and regulations which can vary greatly from one area to another.

Watch this video to see how the IHO is striving to support a healthy and sustainable ocean by providing data on Marine Protected Areas.

The S-122 Marine protected Areas (MPAs) standard, part of the S-100 framework, provides boats with access to vital MPA information, including boundaries and level of protection, keeping them well informed of the regulations in force in the areas where they navigate. 🗺 🚢

Marine and coastal environments play a strategic role for global sustainability, which emphasizes the need for integrated land–sea governance and resilient spatial planning.

Within this context, the XXVIII FIG Congress was held in Cape Town, South Africa, from 24 to 29 May 2026, bringing together surveying, geospatial, hydrographic, land administration and academic professionals from around the world. Under the theme “The Future We Want – The SDGs and Beyond”, the Congress focused on how geospatial knowledge, innovation and international cooperation can support sustainable development, resilience and inclusive growth beyond the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

Hydrography, marine surveying and bathymetric data acquisition play a key role in this domain, especially in coastal and near-shore areas where terrestrial and marine domains converge and where many of the challenges related to climate change, coastal resilience and sustainable development are concentrated. The Congress highlighted a growing convergence between terrestrial and marine geospatial disciplines and shed light on opportunities for increased cooperation between FIG and the IHO.

IHO Director Luigi Sinapi delivered a keynote presentation titled “The S-100 Standard: Enabling a New Digital Vision of the Marine Environment”, highlighting the strategic importance of authoritative marine geospatial information and the role of the S-100 Universal Hydrographic Data Model as an enabling framework for integrated ocean governance.

The Blue Economy: a winning investment 🌊 🚢

In the words of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, the ocean economy is worth over 2 trillion USD, but unlike other sectors, we are yet to establish the right financial mechanisms to sustainably unlock this potential.

In line with this, a group of policymakers, business leaders, investors, banks, pension funds, sovereign wealth funds and international experts recently gathered in Monaco for the Blue Economy and Finance Forum, where they discussed different potential solutions to accelerate the transition to a sustainable blue economy and finance ocean actions.

The IHO was also present to explore where hydrography and seabed mapping fit into the wider economic landscape of the ocean economy, and to showcase how S-100 can support efficient navigation and smart ports.

The IHO Secretariat was represented by Secretary-General Dr Mathias Jonas, Assistant Director Sam Harper, Public Relations & Communications Officer Sarah Jones-Couture, Project Officer Rodrigo Torres and Communications Assistant Luz Verónica Delvasto Algarín.

Setting the standards 🌊

81 experts from 29 nations gathered for the IHO's Hydrographic Services and Standards Committee (HSSC) last week. Held in Poland, participants contributed to several significant outcomes, including the approval of the product specifications for Phase 2 of the S-100 implementation:
🐙S-122 Marine Protected Areas
📻S-123 Marine Radio Services
🚢S-125 Navigational Services
⚓️S-127 Marine Traffic Management
🏗S-131 Marine Harbour Infrastructure

The HSSC meeting also presented the results of S-100 trials and testbeds conducted in Canada, Australia, France and the United Kingdom. The results demonstrate that S-100 products provide pilots with greater confidence in difficult conditions and offer mariners clearer insights into vessel behaviour.

Two new sea trial areas were approved in India and China, extending the global reach of this real-world validation effort.

Additionally, Julia Powell (USA) was elected as the new HSSC Chair, and Nathalie Leidinger (France) was re-elected as Vice-Chair for 2026–2029.

The IHO Secretariat was represented by Director John Nyberg, Assistant Director Eric Langlois and Assistant Director Yong Baek.

The IHO reinforces the importance of hydrographic data for safety of navigation and ecosystem protection in Antarctica🐧🚢

Hydrographic data supports the scientific models that help us better understand the impacts of global change on Antarctica, particularly as sea‑ice extent continues to decline due to changing ocean and atmospheric conditions. ⛈️

The IHO participated in the 48th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting, contributing as an expert organization to discussions on science, operations, and tourism in the Antarctic region.❄️

As part of the meeting, IHO Secretary-General Dr. Mathias Jonas, delivered a presentation that focused on progress in ocean mapping and on the planned regional rollout of S-100-based data services, reinforcing the importance of improved data collection and sharing to support safe navigation and scientific research.

The IBSC continues to play a central role in promoting internationally recognised standards for hydrographic surveyors and nautical cartographers worldwide.🗺 🎓

The International Board on Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers (IBSC) is holding its 49th meeting. On this occasion the board is reviewing 19 programmes from 15 countries submitted for recognition in accordance with IHO Standards S-5 and S-8. Five of the submissions are from new programmes seeking recognition under the IHO standards framework.

🌍A significant milestone has already been achieved with the formal recognition of the first nautical cartography programme from Africa, which was submitted by Nigeria.

This marks an important step in expanding global participation in internationally recognized hydrographic and nautical cartographic education.

Other topics discussed include governance review, outreach initiatives and the role of AI in hydrographic education and competency assessment.

The meeting is being hosted by the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The IHO Secretariat is represented by Assistant Director Leonel Manteigas.

🚢International Day for Women in Maritime♀️

Today, the IHO is joining the maritime community in recognizing the vital contributions of women to the maritime industry.

Although inequality persists, numerous initiatives, such as the Empowering Women in Hydrography project, are striving to encourage more women to enter the field.

Since the project's implementation in 2021, encouraging steps have been taken towards achieving gender balance in hydrography:
✨ Female national hydrographers increased from 7% to 10.5%
✨ Women chairing IHO bodies rose from 13% to 32%
✨ Women now serve as vice-chairs in 44% of IHO organs

From onboard operations to leadership and policy-making, diversity creates a more inclusive and innovative maritime industry.
