🔹 As we concluded the second day of the Regional Meeting / Workshop on Strengthening Risk Analysis, Data Exchange, and Early Warning Systems in Skopje, the takeaway is clear: stronger regional cooperation, effective data exchange, and enhanced early warning capacities are essential for responding to evolving migration-related risks.

Supported by IOM Western Balkans, and with the expertise of Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency and the Ministry of Interior of Slovenia, the workshop provided a valuable platform for advancing common understanding and reinforcing cooperation across the region.

Day 1 of the Regional Workshop on Strengthening Risk Analysis, Data Exchange, and Early Warning Systems in Skopje.

Organised by the MARRI Regional Centre under the Presidency-in-Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the support of IOM Western Balkans, the workshop brought together representatives from MARRI administrations, Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency and Ministrstvo za notranje zadeve, to discuss the importance of risk analysis and information exchange in addressing complex migratory situations.

Through expert presentations and interactive discussions, participants explored the role of risk analysis within the EU Integrated Border Management framework, exchanged regional experiences and practices, and discussed emerging migration trends, operational challenges, and opportunities for stronger cross-border cooperation.

The workshop highlighted the importance of strengthening analytical capacities, early warning systems, and regional cooperation to support timely responses and informed decision-making in a rapidly evolving migration context.

📍 MARRI Friends Meeting / Diplomatic Briefing 2026 in Skopje

The 2026 Diplomatic Briefing reaffirmed strong commitment to advancing regional cooperation in migration governance and further strengthening the work of MARRI Regional Centre. The speakers highlighted continued political and institutional support for the Initiative and its role as a platform for coordination, dialogue and joint action across the region.

The event was opened by the Deputy Minister of Interior of North Macedonia, Astrit Iseni, who underlined MARRI’s role as a bridge between administrations, international partners and European institutions. This was followed by contributions from the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of North Macedonia, Zoran Dimitrovski, and Edin Dilberović, Acting Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who both reiterated support for the Initiative and its regional mandate.

The MARRI RC Director Angela Boranieva, presented a strategic overview of MARRI’s work over the past year and outlined its key priorities going forward. She emphasized the importance of sustained partnerships and synergies to ensure more efficient and impactful results.

The meeting once again confirmed broad support from partners and stakeholders for the work of MARRI and the Regional Centre, reinforcing its role as a trusted platform for cooperation and practical solutions in the region. Beyond the formal discussions, the event also provided an opportunity for informal networking and exchange of ideas among participants.

🔹 Last week, MARRI RC Director Angela Boranieva participated in the European Police Congress in Berlin, contributing to Panel III: “Human trafficking and illegal migration/routes, dynamics and criminal structures.”

📌 During the discussion, Director Boranieva highlighted the evolving security dynamics along the Western Balkans route, emphasizing the growing links between irregular migration, migrant smuggling, trafficking in human beings and organized crime. She underlined the importance of strengthened regional cooperation, trusted partnerships, financial investigations, and operational alignment with European partners in addressing these complex challenges.

The intervention also reaffirmed the important role of regional organizations in translating shared priorities into practical cooperation, while supporting sustainable and coordinated responses to migration and security challenges across the region.

In Vienna this week, MARRI RC Director Angela Boranieva signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), formalising the continuation of a well-established and trusted partnership.

The agreement underscores a shared commitment to advancing migration governance, fostering regional cooperation and promoting practical responses to evolving migration challenges.

It also provides a structured framework for further collaboration in areas of mutual interest, contributing to a more coordinated and sustainable approach to migration in the region.

📍Last week in Podgorica, representatives from MARRI administrations came together for the Regional Workshop on Migration Statistics Harmonization to strengthen alignment with EU standards.

Organized by the MARRI Regional Centre with support of the Regional School of Public Administration (ReSPA) and International Organization for Migration (IOM), participants exchanged best practices, identified data gaps, and advanced cooperation on international protection statistics.

👉 An important part of the workshop was the expert contribution from the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT), which showcased how strong inter‑institutional cooperation and modern data systems can support high quality asylum statistics.

📍 Sarajevo | 28–29 April 2026 👉From policy to practice.

MARRI Regional Centre under the Presidency-in-Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is bringing together experts and practitioners from across the region for a workshop focused on strengthening gender-sensitive border management in the fight against trafficking in human beings.

Through interactive sessions, real-life scenarios, and peer exchange, participants are working on turning policies into practical tools — improving how border authorities identify vulnerabilities, protect victims, and respond effectively.

The workshop is organized with support from the EU4FAST project, in cooperation with the Gender Equality Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina as host of the event.

🔹 Strengthening regional cooperation remains a shared priority for Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency and MARRI.

MARRI RC Director Angela Boranieva was honoured to welcome Teute Krasniqi, Frontex Senior Liaison Officer to Western Balkan Region at the MARRI Regional Centre in Skopje.

👉 The meeting was a valuable opportunity to exchange updates on current priorities and ongoing activities, and to explore possibilities for further cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Particular attention was given to Frontex’s ongoing support across the region as well as MARRI’s role in facilitating regional cooperation and dialogue.

🤝 Concluding the 5th Sarajevo Migration Dialogue, representatives from across the Western Balkans, together with partners and experts, reaffirmed the importance of a shared approach to migration management.

welcomes the leadership of the Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina in convening this important platform, with the support of Switzerland. The Dialogue builds on a structured regional process, linking technical-level exchanges with high-level engagement.

As part of the programme, MARRI RC Director Angela Boranieva participated in Session II: “From Declaration to Practice: Implementation Architecture and the Role of MARRI”, alongside Ivica Bošnjak, Deputy Minister of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The session was moderated by Dr Ankica Tomic, Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina to MARRI RC.

The discussion highlighted several key points:
🔹 The importance of political realism, focusing on strengthening existing regional mechanisms rather than creating new structures,
🔹 The recognition of MARRI as a continuity and coordination platform, ensuring trust, institutional memory and sustained regional cooperation,
🔹 The importance of predictable resources and strengthened capacities to ensure effective and long-term implementation,
🔹 The value of MARRI as a bridge between regional efforts and European frameworks, particularly in the context of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum.

A key milestone of this year’s Dialogue is the Regional Declaration, developed through extensive consultations and technical discussions, with active contributions from MARRI RC. The Declaration reflects a shared commitment to enhanced cooperation, strengthened capacities and continued dialogue, while remaining open to engagement with partners.

As a regional initiative, MARRI remains committed to supporting its Participants in translating policy into practice and fostering sustained cooperation across the region.

📚 MARRI Regional Centre had the pleasure of welcoming students from the Faculty of Security in Skopje, accompanied by Prof. dr. sc. Nikola Dujovski, for an insightful visit focused on migration governance and regional cooperation.

📃 This visit builds on the Memorandum of Understanding between MARRI RC and the Faculty, which aims to strengthen the exchange of information, raise knowledge and interest in migration-related topics as well as promote closer cooperation between academia and practice.

🔎 During the visit, MARRI RC Director Angela Boranieva presented the Initiative’s mandate, key activities and its role in fostering regional cooperation in migration management. The discussion highlighted the importance of education in preparing future professionals and explored opportunities for developing tailored trainings, as well as implementing joint technical and scientific cooperation programmes.

👉 MARRI RC remains committed to supporting knowledge-sharing initiatives and engaging with academic partners to contribute to informed and effective migration policies in the region.
