What if you could do brain surgery without opening the skull? This is exactly what Swedish neurosurgeon Lars Leksell (1907–1986) pioneered. ✨
🧠 Leksell came up with the concept of radiosurgery in the 1950s, using focused radiation to treat brain tissue. After years of work, this led to the development of the 'Gamma Knife', first installed in Stockholm in the 1960s.
👨‍⚕️The device directs multiple beams of radiation at a precise target within the brain, enabling highly accurate treatment of brain tumours and other brain diseases without damaging healthy tissue.
❤️‍🩹 Radiosurgery has become one of the most important advances in modern medicine and has helped millions of patients worldwide.
In 1972, Leksell founded Swedish company Elekta, which manufactures equipment for radiation therapy and radiosurgery based on his inventions. Today, Elekta is a global business with offices in 40+ countries.

Glad to see this feature of Mr. Bekri Ajdini from Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of North Macedonia who was one of two participants from North Macedonia 🇲🇰 in the 🇸🇪 Swedish Trade Academy on EU 🇪🇺 integration 2026, organized by the Swedish National Board of Trade.

Mr Ajdini notes that: ”As North Macedonia advances towards EU membership, this knowledge will help me contribute to institutional coordination, policy alignment and institutional preparedness. It will also be valuable for supporting companies from North Macedonia seeking to expand within the EU market and internationally”.

Raoul Wallenberg saved tens of thousands of Jews from the Holocaust with his diplomacy, courage, and humanitarian commitment. His story shows that one person can make a great difference.

In his memory, the Raoul Wallenberg Academy today awards Lena Jersenius the Raoul Wallenberg prize for her dedicated work to strengthen young people's understanding of the Holocaust, democracy, and human rights. The Academy also presented the Young Courage Award to 16 recipients, aged 15–20, for demonstrating outstanding civic courage. Minister for Foreign Affairs @‌Maria Malmer Stenergard received the 16 recipients earlier in the day.

During the prize ceremony, Ms Malmer Stenergard also presented the Ministry for Foreign Affairs' new site where all public documents concerning Raoul Wallenberg and his story are gathered. By collecting and making this material accessible, it becomes easier for researchers, journalists, and others to delve deeper into one of Sweden’s most significant historical and foreign policy matters.

Preserving and safeguarding knowledge about Raoul Wallenberg is important – both to understand our history and to carry his legacy forward.

The Ceremony took place yesterday in Stockholm.

The aim of the Young Courage Award is to encourage young people to take active part in their societies and act with moral courage to improve the lives of their communities.

16 young people from 15 countries all over the globe received recognition for their courageous efforts, among them Jovan from North Macedonia.
Throughout the week they all got a chance to get to know each other and learn about their respective acts of moral courage, but also walk in the footsteps of Raoul Wallenberg - Swedish diplomat who saved lives of tens of thousands of Jews from the Holocaust.

In September, the Embassy will host a reception to honour and recognize all of the young people from North Macedonia that got nominated for the Young Courage Award 2026 - their actions count and are truly meaningful contributions to the betterment of their communities.
