Why IP Strategy Matters in Technology Commercialisation?

Many organisations see IP as something to consider only when a technology is ready for licensing or commercialisation. In reality, successful commercialisation starts much earlier, with the alignment of technology, business and IP strategies.

IP strategy is about more than filing patents. It helps determine what to protect, how to create value from innovation, and whether there is sufficient Freedom to Operate (FTO) to bring a product to market without infringing third-party patent rights. Having a patent alone does not automatically mean a technology is ready for commercialisation.

At NMB, IP strategy is an integral part of our Venture Builder model. Technology development, commercialisation and ecosystem building are approached together to accelerate industry adoption, strengthen investment readiness and create long-term value.

Prof. (Adj.) Dr. Rezal Khairi Ahmad, representing NMB, participated as a speaker in a Panel Session at the International Battery Summit (IBS) 2026 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Titled “What Makes a Competitive Battery Ecosystem? Insights from ASEAN Industry Leaders”, the panel was moderated by Marvin R. Reinhart from Indonesia Battery Corporation and featured regional industry perspectives from Malaysia and Indonesia.

The discussion explored key elements needed to build a competitive battery ecosystem, including industry collaboration, technology development, value chain readiness and regional market opportunities.

Through platforms such as IBS 2026, NMB continues to support ASEAN-level dialogue and collaboration in advancing battery technology, energy storage and sustainable mobility.

ABTC 2026 EXCLUSIVE SITE VISIT RECAP: Inside GMSB Megafactory 🔋

ABTC 2026 concluded with an exclusive site visit to Gigafactory Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (GMSB), giving selected delegates a closer look at Malaysia’s growing battery manufacturing capabilities.

The visit featured a welcome and safety briefing, followed by a guided tour of GMSB’s R&D laboratory and main battery production line. Delegates had the opportunity to gain first-hand insights into Malaysia’s journey in advancing battery technology, from research and development to pilot-scale manufacturing.

This exclusive visit reflected ABTC 2026’s focus on moving beyond dialogue towards real-world deployment, industrial readiness and regional battery value chain development.

ABTC 2026 CLOSING CEREMONY RECAP: Passing the Baton to the Philippines 🇲🇾🤝🇵🇭

The 4th ASEAN Battery Technology Conference (ABTC 2026) concluded with a meaningful closing ceremony, marking the end of three days of knowledge exchange, regional collaboration and industry-driven conversations on ASEAN’s battery future.

The ceremony featured closing remarks by Prof. (Adj.) Dr. Rezal Khairi Ahmad, Chief Executive Officer of NMB (NanoMalaysia Berhad), followed by the official handover of the ABTC hostship from Malaysia to the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP), host of the 5th ASEAN Battery Technology Conference in 2027.

This handover symbolises ASEAN’s continued commitment to advancing the region’s battery and electric mobility ecosystem, while strengthening collaboration across research, manufacturing, safety, investment and market deployment.

ABTC 2026 DAY 3 PANEL DISCUSSION RECAP: Driving Green Technology Investments in ASEAN 🌱

Day 3 of ABTC 2026 featured Panel Discussion 7: Driving Green Technology Investments in ASEAN: Policy Signals, Sustainability Commitments & Regional Opportunities, under the theme Driving Application Integration & Market Enablement.

Moderated by Dr. Abdul Hakim Ab Rahim from MGTC, the session brought together regional perspectives from BNP Paribas, UOB Singapore, Pertamina and the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP).

The discussion explored the importance of clear policy signals, sustainable financing, regional investment opportunities and industry commitment in accelerating green technology and battery-related deployment across ASEAN.

As ABTC 2026 moved towards its closing, this session reinforced the need for stronger cross-sector collaboration to support the region’s clean energy transition and build a more competitive battery ecosystem.
