Our Story

The last frontier market in Southeast Asia, the second largest country and possibly the least known in the region. Myanmar has been dubbed with titles, for many obvious reasons. One thing for sure, Myanmar is country of both opportunities and challenges. Now that it is embarking on an extensive transformation process, which began following the end of more than five decades of military regime in 2011, Myanmar will have to overcome challenges that keep it from climbing the development ladder. An important milestone took place in 2015 in the form of a peaceful handover of power to the opposition party, NLD, following its decisive victory in the country’s first-ever free election since 1962. Despite its economic potential, Myanmar today remains one of the least developed countries in the world. In order for Myanmar to achieve sustainable development, there are urgent needs for further political, social and economic reforms, as well as the return to peace and national unity. Once Myanmar’s second largest trading partner in the aftermath of World War II, the Federal Republic of Germany has always maintained strong presence in the country. However, bilateral relations between the two were suspended in 1988 following a military crackdown on pro-democracy civilian movement. It was only in 2011, along with Myanmar’s transition to democracy and opening up of the economy, that Germany resumed its commitments in development cooperation. Since 2012, the German government has been consistently expanding its support for the transition process in Myanmar through GIZ, which operates on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). As Myanmar treads the path to democratisation, GIZ stands ready to support the reform efforts. GIZ works from the grassroots up to the relevant levels of Government. We aim to align private and development goals to support the creation of a harmonious society and inclusive, sustainable economic growth.
