The Inland Water Transport (IWT), one of the state owned transport enterprises under the Ministry of Transport and Communications , was established since 1865. At the present, IWT is a leading river transport enterprise providing a range of services for the secure and smooth transportation in Myanmar.
Currently, IWT has a fleet of 259 vessels comprising passenger cm cargo vessels, powered barges, pusher tugs, dumb barges, station pontoons and etc;. IWT is transporting about of 15.06 million passengers and 2.07 million tons of cargo annually providing the cheapest means of transport in Myanmar. Even though other modes of transport in Myanmar have been improved rapidly,IWT is playing an important and essential role of transport due to its natural navigable waterways of rivers in Myanmar.
History
The present IWT's forerunner was set up in 1865. At that time the organization functioned as a private enterprise under the name of Irrawaddy Flotilla Company Limited (IFCL) .
The IFCL was nationalized on 1st June 1948 after gaining Independence from the British Colonial Rule.
Under the plan to provide new administrative order, " Inland Water Transport Board" was renamed as " Inland Water Transport Corporation" in 1972 .
It has been changed to the present name of "Inland Water Transport" with effect from 1st April 1989.
Policy of Inland Water Transport
For the development of IWT sector, IWT will try it best future transformation to privatization by reforming in accordance with time and system obtaining local and foreign assistance and investment to implement by JV, BOT and PPP systems.
Objectives of IWT
To perform for sustainable development of public Transport within the framework of IWT Laws, by law and authority.
To connect with other transport networks for safe and smooth transportation of passengers and cargo along navigable waterways where IWT vessels can play.
To extend coastal transportation services in addition to river transportation in future.
To perform River port management and post services which will be developed in accordance time and system.
To try and reform our best for modernization and development of IWT sector and to cooperate with local and foreign organization for required investment and technologies.
To perform by taking special care for wrested security and safety of passengers cargo and vessels.
To up grad IWT dockyards for construction and repairing of vessels according to the market demand.
To cultivate and enhance capacity and efficiency of personnel.
In future, to stand as department of high efficiency and good services by successfully transforming into privatization.

Functions Of IWT
To perform water transport services in the state and to perform other related vessel services by this laws.
To perform security and safety of passengers, cargo, vessels and crew in providing water transport services and not to make the environment polluted in accordance with the existing law.
To perform passenger and cargo transportation along the coast and rivers stipulate by the ministry.
To procure and stare the raw materials, machineries and fuel needed for dockyards, construction and repairing of vessels.
To accept repairing construction and selling of new vessels owned by Government Department and Organizations, local foreign private organizations and other services.
To perform the tasks occasionally offered by the national security and interest.
To control the state properties and finances not to be wasted, Lost, damaged and stolen.
To perform any matters needed to increase the revenues and profit by the agreement of the Government and the Ministry.
To collect the money due by IWT accordance with the existing law and injecting to the state Fund.
To manage monetary affairs in accordance with financial rules and regulations.
