U Thet Hnin Aung, General Secretary of the Mining Independent Federation of Myanmar (MICS-TUsF), stated:
Given our country's current situation, it is fair to say that holding official discussions to increase the minimum wage is extremely difficult. On one hand, the political crisis remains unresolved. Furthermore, we are seeing a failure to implement and adhere to the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus. The consequences of this political deadlock are why we cannot officially initiate minimum wage increase negotiations.
Additionally, a critical issue we need to discuss urgently is how to review the wages currently being paid to workers, and how to conduct the necessary surveys. There is still a lot of work to be done. Based on the ongoing discussions between the MICS federation and international brands, we can assess that a specific minimum wage rate is still under negotiation."

Currently, most factories still calculate wages based on the minimum wage of 4,800 Kyats, which was set back in 2018.
Workers express that even when including overtime and additional allowances, a daily take-home pay of around 12,500 Kyats is entirely inadequate to cope with current commodity prices. In Yangon, where house rentals and living costs have spiked, they note that even a daily wage of around 15,000 Kyats would be entirely consumed by basic accommodation and food expenses.
A female factory worker shared the livelihood struggles she is currently facing:
I earn around 500,000 Kyats a month—about 550,000 Kyats this month. But even though I make 550,000 Kyats, I have to use it to pay off people I owe, covering the principal and interest. My actual monthly expenses, including house rent, total around 800,000 to 900,000 Kyats because I have to cover my child's schooling, rent, and daily survival costs for food. To be completely honest, I want the daily basic wage to be raised to 18,000 Kyats alongside an increase in overtime rates. Commodity prices are rising so fast right now that we simply cannot keep up."
Labour activists analyze that as long as workers do not receive wages that match the contemporary cost of living, protests and demands for wage hikes among factory workers will inevitably continue.
With the tripartite mechanism currently suspended, there is no immediate prospect of officially redefining the minimum wage locally. Consequently, labour organizations are continuing to pursue bipartite negotiations directly with international brands.
