Update on Migrant boat from Bakau

The Embassy wishes to inform the public regarding the migrant vessel that departed from Bakau last Saturday. The vessel has docked in Mauritania and the Embassy is currently working in close coordination with local authorities to manage the situation.

Several individuals have been admitted to the hospital and are currently receiving necessary medical treatment.

Others have been escorted to a dedicated center where they are receiving first aid, food, and essential supplies.

Embassy officials are working diligently to verify the nationalities of all those on board to facilitate further communication and support.

We have received reports suggesting that lives were lost at sea during the journey. While these reports are being taken seriously, we wish to clarify that no bodies have been recovered or sighted at this time. We are working with the authorities to confirm the facts surrounding these reports.

The Embassy remains committed to providing transparent updates. Further information will be shared with the public as soon as it becomes available and as the situation develops.

We ask for the public’s patience as we prioritize the humanitarian response and the verification process.

Thank you.
