BUILDING SAFETY AT SEA ⚓

Montserrat Port Authority recently delivered a 3-Day Basic Safety Training programme for members of the National Hydrographic Coordinating Committee (NHCC) , the team behind our bathymetric surveys of the island's coastal zones ,to strengthen their readiness while operating aboard Port vessel MV Soufriere Spirit.

The course was benchmarked against STCW Convention safety standards, giving participants training aligned with internationally recognized best practice.

As part of our ongoing Education Outreach Programme, we were also pleased to welcome two interns from the Fisheries Department to join the training alongside the NHCC team - extending these essential safety skills beyond MPA to strengthen safety awareness across our wider maritime community. 🤝

🛟 Day 1 – Personal Survival Techniques & Safety Responsibilities Covered emergency response such as man-overboard procedures, abandon-ship actions, correct use of survival equipment, and each participant's role in keeping the work environment safe.

👩🏾‍🚒🧯 Day 2 – Fire Prevention & Basic Fire Fighting Wrapped up with hands-on practice identifying fire hazards, choosing the right extinguisher, and containing a minor fire before it escalates.

🩹 Day 3 – First Aid at Sea Focused on casualty assessment, CPR awareness, bleeding and wound care, and safe casualty handling and communication in a maritime setting.

Safety remains a top priority for our staff, partners, and port operations. Congratulations to the NHCC team on completing this training, and thank you to the facilitators who made it happen! 👏

The Montserrat Port Authority joined maritime leaders and professionals from across the United Kingdom, Crown Dependencies, and British Overseas Territories at the 37th Red Ensign Group (REG) Conference, held in Bermuda from 30 June to 2 July 2026.

The Red Ensign Group (REG) is a partnership dedicated to maintaining high standards in maritime safety, security, environmental protection, and vessel registration. The annual conference provides a platform for member administrations to collaborate, share best practices, and address emerging challenges facing the maritime sector.

Representing the Montserrat Port Authority were Mr. Joseph O'Garro, Port Manager & Harbour Master; Mr. George Green, Port Superintendent & Registrar of Ships; Ms. Khalah Ryan, Designated Person, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE); and Mr. Ian Clarkson, Maritime Policy and Compliance Consultant.

The conference focused on strategic priorities for the maritime sector, including resilience, regulatory developments, sustainability, and the evolving challenges facing the global shipping industry. Participation in this important forum ensures that Montserrat remains actively engaged in international maritime discussions and continues to uphold the high standards associated with the Red Ensign Group.

On Thursday evening, colleagues, friends, family, and loved ones gathered for a heartfelt candlelight vigil in remembrance of John 'Tyghar' Morgan, our former Fleet and Facilities Supervisor. The evening was filled with reflection, unity, and appreciation for the dedication, hard work, and memories he leaves behind.

Though gone, he will never be forgotten. 🕯️🤍

The Montserrat Port Authority was proud to participate in the 2026 Labour Day Walk as staff came together in unity, strength, and community spirit.

This year’s walk was especially meaningful as team members wore commemorative shirts in memory of John 'Tyghar' Morgan, honoring his life and legacy.

Labour Day serves as a reminder of the value of hard work, dedication, and the important role workers play in building and strengthening our community.
