Another important milestone for the Malta–Sicily Interconnector 2 (IC2), with the successful arrival, transportation and installation of the project’s auto transformer and shunt reactors in Malta and Sicily.

These complex operations required extensive planning and close coordination between contractors, engineers, authorities and project stakeholders.

Once commissioned, IC2 will strengthen Malta’s security of electricity supply, improve network resilience and support the country’s transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy system.

Works on Malta’s second electricity interconnector continue to progress at the Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq landing site.

The pilot hole for the Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) process has now been completed, and the first of two reaming passes has commenced to gradually enlarge the bore to the required diameter.

In this video, ICM’s Perit explains the HDD process, the different stages involved and how this technique allows the cable ducts to be installed beneath the seabed while minimising disruption to the surrounding area.

Horizontal directional drilling works have started in Malta for Malta’s second electricity interconnector, creating the underground link between the onshore and offshore sections while minimising the impact on the coastline.

Once completed, the project will double Malta’s electricity interconnection capacity, strengthen energy security and support the integration of more renewable energy.

Last week in Norway 🇳🇴, we were invited by Nexans to attend the inauguration of Nexans Electra ⚓ — the advanced cable-laying vessel that will lay the 99km high-voltage subsea cable between Malta and Sicily.

The vessel will later travel to Charleston, USA, to load the cable manufactured specifically for the Second Interconnector project before sailing to Malta in the coming months. ⚡

Another important milestone for the Second Malta–Sicily Interconnector (IC2). ⚡

The offshore route has now been successfully cleared, with 117 items of unexploded wartime ordnance safely removed from the planned cable corridor. 🌊

This also closes a long period of surveying and seabed preparation activities, involving several contractors and local stakeholders, including the Armed Forces of Malta, the University of Malta and Heritage Malta.

A key step towards laying the new interconnector cable later this year and strengthening Malta’s security of supply. 🇲🇹
